Chapter Two: Illenium. And the Hoods. 🖤

Creature pulled the plug. I wasn’t going to quit.

Eddie was riding for Sector 9 at the time — they wanted to start a shortboard company, Sector 9 being known for longboards. I saw the opportunity in Creature’s fallout and started going to the factory, developing shapes, concaves and eventually graphics. My marketing background, love for skateboarding, and everything I’d built with P.U.P.I.L. made it seem like second nature. I landed on the name Illenium — we were on the verge of the “ill millennium,” a few months before Y2K.

The brand was originally meant to be mine and Sam’s. He wanted to call it “Mentors” — which would’ve been sick too — but I was thinking bigger, more universal. Illenium made sense. Our slogan, “Now Is The Time,” was a reflection of the world we were living in.

Sam’s art was instrumental from the start. He’d always draw silhouettes of the crew on top of a vert ramp — that raw Hesh Crew vibration. I asked him to draw something that captured it, and he came back with the original group of hoods. I gave it meaning: the hoods represented the nameless, faceless skaters who represent all aspects of skateboarding — and eventually we’d find teammates to fill each one.

Early on, we took a trip to Vancouver in Sector Nine’s “9 Ball” van, got a small write-up in Thrasher. When we got back, there was a discrepancy over the photo incentive payment, and Sam quit the team on the spot. I was bummed — I’d thought this was going to be our brand — but I wasn’t going to quit. Sam went on to ride for 151. I pushed Illenium forward.
