My personal highlights and observations of Maison&Objets 🖇️
What I expected was more futuristic and metallic design from the ’60s combined with 2000s trends 🚀 Boy, was I far from reality. The only thing that actually showcased some of my expectations is in the 1st picture with the aluminum table and candleholders, however we got not mass production but unique pieces

Kitsch design is here, and its main competitor is the beige mom aesthetic. Don’t get me wrong; I’m all in for kitsch design. I love how designers this year played with our sentiments and nostalgia, adding forms and motifs that we know so well. Pic no. 3 is a good example of taking an old grandma’s abat-jour, adding trendy pink as a base, and creating a great design piece that will add some soul to your place. There is no middle ground for design right now: it’s either bright or neutral colors, either plastic and glass or wood and textile

I found a lot of nice graphical designs, mostly in lighting, where pieces consist of thin lines and massive forms. For example, @pulpoproducts made a fascinating contrast of the light thin form of legs in heavy metal and a massive round form made in transparent glass on them

Natural materials were everywhere: several brands made furniture out of burnt stumps, many used nice ‘village house’ fabric, and many carpets were made by small brands with old techniques that they keep as family recipes. It was unusual to see wool as the main material for beanbags, but somehow it works in @maisondevacances

Craft art is everything right now, and I bet a lot of your friends found these nice ceramic and knitting hobbies in the past two years. And design mirrors it, diving deeper into the past, into art crafts that countries kept for centuries. One of the brands, The Zhai, is a great example of that (picture no. 8), has a very beautiful stand with a strong identity that dives deeper into Chinese cultural codes

What would you choose for your house out of all the pieces you saw? Let me know in the comments 🫶🏻
