“Do we need a crane?”

It was an understandable question, but also a gratuitous one. We already knew the answer.

Did we need a crane? No more than we *needed* clowns who also do burlesque. No more than we *needed* a street lamp that turned everything and everyone shades of grey. No more than we *needed* a 12-foot telephone booth (‘The World’s Most Generous’) with live operators who provided gifts through a secret slot.

“Yes, of course we need a crane.”

At @pewpewpresents we ideate at full speed with the training wheels off. Then we slow down and ask “How?” We come up with the most innovative, creative, and awe-inducing ideas we possibly can — and then scale back (only if budget, safety, or logistics necessitates) to make them realistic.

Spectacle, absurdity, and awe are three of the main components of our participatory art, so we often ask ourselves, “What is the most over-the-top thing we can do?” To some degree, the more unnecessary, the bigger the necessity.

A crane was, literally and figuratively, the most over-the-top thing we could do at our Art Basel party for Teleport in 2022.

While lowering a car full of performers over the crowd or lifting a band into the sky via crane were ideas that turned out to be unaffordable, we managed to raise fire-spinning mirror-suited ballerina aerialist @naimapohler over the crowd via a crane with a satellite attached — turning her into a human disco ball.

That was just one of dozens of performances that night — at an event that also included a clandestine cocktail lounge that required hidden keys for entry, a 75 square-foot floral and laser installation, and immersive actors and art installations around every corner.

It’s amazing the things we can pull off with a client who has a reasonable budget, an imagination, and a willingness to take risks in order to blow people’s minds.

Last weekend, we got to reuse so many props from that event (and other past events) at a wedding Pew Pew produced. It was nice to take a trip down memory lane.

Here’s to hoping for another client as open and collaborative as Teleport. For now, @longnate08 and I are full speed on Pew Pew’s next project in Mexico City.
