Peyton Heathery is a senior at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School in Illinois. The 5-foot-10 setter
also plays for 1st Alliance 17 Gold. The Coastal Carolina commit outlined her journey in this Digging Dish.
“I started playing volleyball when I was younger and pretty quickly fell in love with it,” she said. “I got into it because of my family and I always looked up to my older sister Jordan (setter at Wichita State). She is really the one who got me playing. I started playing when I was 3 years old.”
She has always been her team’s orchestrator.
“I’ve always been a setter,” she said. “I love the competitive feel to the position.”
Continuing her family’s legacy in college volleyball was important to her with her mom, three aunts and her sister all playing at that level.
“Playing in college was always a huge goal of mine,” she said. “My mom and aunts played in college so I was really trying to work hard to get there.”
She is energized by playing volleyball with her teammates.
“My favorite part is definitely being on a team and competing,” she said. “I love how much energy there is during a close game and being able to celebrate with my teammates. I’ve also met some of my best friends through volleyball.”
She instantly was filled with happiness when she visited Coastal Carolina.
“What stood out to me about Coastal Carolina was the coaching staff, the team culture and the overall environment,” she said. “I could really see myself being happy there, and it felt like a place where I could grow both as a volleyball player and as a person.”
She works on her athleticism and strength.
“Outside of team practices, I lift and work on getting stronger and more athletic,” she said. “I also try to get extra volleyball reps in whenever I can and work on the little things that will make me better.”
She offered words of wisdom.
“Don’t compare yourself to other players or get discouraged if things aren’t happening as fast as you want them to,” she said. “Keep working and trust yourself and always show up for your teammates.”
