Committed to Increasing Awareness & Survival Rates for Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Two years ago this man refused to give up on a stranger. Now he took the stage and told hundreds women why the minutes before help arrives are everything.

I still can’t say thank you in a way that feels like enough.

So I’ll say it the only way that counts: learn CPR. Know where the AED is.

Be someone’s Terry. 🤍

The paramedic who brought me back walked onto the ICON stage and I did not know he was coming.

Terry Ortiz has been a paramedic for 23 years. He told a room full of women that every cardiac arrest save he’s ever had - every single one - came back with major neurological deficits.

I’m the reason he uses the word “one-percenter.”

But here’s the part I need you to hear. My deficits aren’t obvious. They’re still real. And Terry stood on that stage to say what he says everywhere he goes: the minutes before help arrives are the minutes that decide everything. Early CPR. An AED within reach. Someone in the room who knows what to do. That’s the difference between a life, a life with deficits, and no life at all.

That’s why this year’s ICON Humanitarian of the Year went to the Peyton Walker Foundation.

Peyton was 19. A college sophomore who wanted to be a physician assistant. She died of sudden cardiac arrest from a heart condition - and her mom, Julie, turned that loss into a mission: free EKG heart screenings for students, CPR and AED training, and getting AEDs into every school so that when a heart stops, someone nearby is ready.

Because every hour of every day, a student dies from sudden cardiac arrest. Most of those hearts had a detectable, treatable condition nobody caught. Fewer than 1 in 10 people survive it. Immediate CPR can double or triple those odds.

I got to be a 1% story because of what happened in those minutes. Most people don’t get a Terry.

So learn CPR. Know where the AED is. Get your kids’ hearts screened. Be the reason someone else gets their 1%. 🤍

Thank you, Peyton Walker Foundation, for being the hands. And Terry - I still don’t have the words. I’ll keep trying.
