💕🌈We were delighted to be at the PFLAG Regional Conference, “Love Out Loud” yesterday, with our amazing PFLAG NorCal and Nevada Chapters.

Anu Gupta @anew_gupta, from our Chapter spoke captivatingly with the incredible and brilliant Amaya and Lucy from @pflagfremont on “How to grow a diverse Chapter; Stories from the Asian-American Ethnoburbs”. Thank you, Krista and Elizabeth for attending the Summit, and Jamie and others for attending online.

Thank you to Drew, @pflag_fresno, our Regional Director for pulling off our first Regional Conference with @pflagsf’s @robertcostic, @_natemueller and Sandy - you all literally brought the National Conference to us with so many amazing sessions, opportunities to learn, interact with PFLAG chapters and other LGBTQ+ supporting organizations, and to network. Thank you! 💕

Thank you to Nadine for a moving land acknowledgement. We really enjoyed attending @rkenanarun’s session on the @lgbtasylumproject, Veronica, @pflagoeb’s session on Safety, Lainie, @pflag_trivalley and Jessica, @pflagsjp’s session on School Board Advocacy and many others. This Saturday, October 10th, PFLAG families and allies from across the Mid-Pacific region meet at Skyline College in San Bruno for Love Out Loud, our regional summit. 🏳️‍🌈 We are thrilled our dear friend, @rkenanarun, ED @lgbtasylumproject will be speaking on standing up for LGBT Asylum seekers!

Here’s the session lineup:

→ Advancing PFLAG’s Mission Through Mental Health Partnership, with the Yale LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative
→ How to Grow a Diverse Chapter: Stories from the Asian-American Ethnoburbs
→ Standing Up for LGBTQ+ Asylum Seekers, with The LGBT Asylum Project
→ Safety First: Exploring Chapter Safety Planning

We also have some incredible sessions from leaders in the community across partner organizations. A lot of our sessions are led by PFLAG chapter leaders who have done this work in their own communities, from school board meetings to reaching families outside their usual circles.

The majority of books banned are by or about people of color and LGBTQ+ people.

We believe that all kids should be able to see themselves reflected in a book.

We wrote Jacob’s Missing Book to support kids who are experiencing book bans, and to raise awareness of the impact of book bans on kids.

Our books help kids who are different to feel seen and be accepted by their communities, and kids who aren’t different to be empathetic and kind.

This week, call or write to your representatives about book banning and the impact on kids.

🪷About the session - Building a diverse and intersectional community is always easier said than done. If your chapter or board lacks diversity, this is the talk for you! We’ll share experiences from the Asian-American ethnoburbs of San Ramon, Danville, and the Tri-Cities, covering common pitfalls, ways to reach people outside our bubbles, and real-life scenarios.

🪷About the Summit: 16 PFLAG chapters across Northern California and Nevada will be in one room on October 10th. The Mid-Pacific Regional Summit brings chapter leaders and partner organizations to Skyline College in San Bruno for one day, under the theme “Love Out Loud”. The agenda is practical, delivered by our amazing colleagues and partners: chapter safety planning, working with local school districts, growing chapters that reflect our communities, state legislative advocacy, a session on LGBTQ+ mental health with the Yale LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative, Yale School of Public Health. And our dear friend Kenan Arun, ED, LGBT Asylum Project @lgbtasylumproject will talk about standing up for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers...

Chapters across the region (and nation) face many of the same questions.
How do we keep members safe?
How are we useful to a school board?
How do we grow past the same twenty people?

Reading "a major loss for Donald Trump" will never get old!

The Trump administration’s relentless and hateful campaign against transgender children has hit another roadblock, as their lawsuit alleging California violated Title IX by allowing trans athletes to play with their gender will never see a trial. Judge Cynthia Valenzuela completely dismissed the case!

As the parent of one of the named athletes in the DOJ lawsuit, @trevornorcross says "It's time to get back to supporting and enjoying girls’ and women's sports instead of trying to tear them down."

Subject Line: Please Protect Gender Affirming Care for Medi-Cal Youth!
We are demanding that CHHS take immediate action to ensure that transgender minors are protected when a federal government rule attacking their care goes into effect October 13!

Despite the fact that new Medicaid rules to end federal coverage for Gender Affirming Care for children on October 13th have been in the works since last year, I have just learned that the state of California and the Department of Healthcare Services do not have a plan for how to deliver this care without federal funding.

Everyone has known since December 2025 that this rule was coming, and yet despite requests by advocates, DHHS did not proactively set up a state pathway to provide this care to Medi-Cal children. This care is required by CA state nondiscrimination law. Without decisive action, California's most vulnerable trans youth will lose their healthcare.

The situation is dire, but we're being told that DHHS can't or won't set up this pathway by October 13. I'm especially concerned that:

If providers are unable to get reimbursed simply and easily through Medi-Cal, they may shutter their services.

Without quick action, come October 13, families receiving Medi-Cal may not be able to access Gender Affirming Care at all. Continuity in treatment is particularly important in Gender Affirming Care for patient well-being and mental health. Disruptions in care would be devastating for youth and their families.

Anything but a pathway for Medi-Cal reimbursement greatly risks disrupting continuity of care, and any bandaid that results in a gap in health care services for our state's most vulnerable is unacceptable.

Children are counting on you to fix this problem.

From an Eleven-Year-Old Child to a Lifelong Advocate: My Journey with PFLAG and HRC

I FOUND MY FAMILY. I FOUND MY VOICE. I FOUND MYSELF.

My name is Saida Mahoney. I’m 29, and this is my story.

At ages 11 and 12 my counselor introduced me to both PFLAG and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). I never imagined that one moment would become 19 years of love, acceptance, friendship, advocacy, Pride, and family.

I grew up with these communities while discovering my voice, embracing each and every single one of my LGBTQIA+ identities, my gender identities and navigating my life as a proud transgender person.

PFLAG and HRC welcomed me exactly as I was. They taught me that I BELONG.

For 19 years, I’ve built friendships, made unforgettable memories, celebrated Pride, advocated for equality, and found people who became family.

They didn’t just give me community. They gave me family.

In 2027, I will celebrate my 20th anniversary with both PFLAG and HRC.

20 years of belonging.
20 years of friendship.
20 years of advocacy.
20 years of love.

And I’m not done yet.

To the counselor who introduced 11-year-old and 12 year old me to these organizations: THANK YOU. You changed my life.

To PFLAG and HRC: THANK YOU FOR BELIEVING IN ME, ACCEPTING ME, AND GIVING ME A PLACE TO BELONG.

19 years down.

20 YEARS NEXT.
