From where I stand, having moved through scenes across the globe, I can tell you the cultures that last never wait for permission. Ground Waves is that kind of force. It’s giving Chicago artists a real home: good energy, real resources, an open door instead of lip service.

So when Murs, an LA legend, comes through and builds that in Chicago, it asks something uncomfortable. What does it say about the gatekeepers still holding tight to the old rules? What does it mean for the hometown voices who swear they’ve got the city on lock? I wonder how many reached out, not for a photo, but to welcome him, collaborate, and add to the work. Did Chicago really let an outsider plant a flag in its own soil? Is this a changing of the guard? What’s next, Chicago?

Does Murs love this city and its artists more than some who were born and bred here? That’s the question that stings. But maybe it’s not an insult. Maybe it’s a mirror. The real issue isn’t whether an outsider cares. It’s whether the people who claim this city are willing to care that much too. If not, don’t get mad at the outsider for doing the work. Get mad at the silence. Then break it. Build.
