Even the things that are unplanned, chaotic and a nuisance are still necessary in order to live a life worth living. It’s a blessing to be able to open my eyes daily and see the sunrise without getting up or moving too far from purpose.

It’s a blessing to be seen in a way that matches my magic rather than vanity; to be told that I am beautiful and the work that I create is worth the path I’ve traveled.

To grow and propagate myself in new ways to making new versions of me that are built on promise, faith, and activation, gratitude.

To walk out my door and see @iamcardib B filming her music video on the same streets we find peace and creativity. Watching the excitement on my son‘s face as the biker boys rolled up and down the street all day long being their true selves for the sake of artistry.

Surprised to run into the amazing educator @monicajsutton and tell her how much she prepared my sweet Son for pre-k 4 when he was 6 months old (Covid). I let her know she’s part of the reason my son is a genius and is on a 5-6th grade reading level and entering 2nd grade a year early… that meant so much, from one Black woman educator to another. His face lit up once he realized who she was and sang “circle time is so much fun”.

This piece is a detail of a series of murals titled “Hysterical Realism: Abya Yala”, permanently on view at the Newark Public Library’s NJ Hispanic Research & Information Center. @newarklibrary @njhric

The entire series looks at how migration creates culture by way of assimilation, miscegenation and reconciliation. It shows a Puerto Rican beach, a Mexican folk dancer, a full moon and an Andean chakana pattern, all coming together in an impossible moment, only partially plausible in the realms of imagination and made physical by art.

I dedicate this public piece to the close to 300 incredibly brave detained immigrants who are in the middle of a hunger and labor strike at the for-profit and GEO Group owned concentration camp of Delaney Hall, right in the city of Newark. I hope one day they get to see this reflection of themselves in public space.

The City of Newark Division of Arts and Cultural Affair and the Newark Arts & Education District, Invest Newark, the Newark Urban Enterprise Zone, the Newark Alliance, and Newark Downtown District — together with local arts nonprofit Project for Empty Space — announced the launch of A CITY OF CREATORS, a large-scale public art initiative activating vacant retail storefronts across Downtown Newark.

The initiative brings art to more than 20 vacant storefronts, creating an immersive arts corridor featuring work by 25 local artists and organizations. Through window-based installations, the initiative connects artists, small businesses, and neighborhood narratives, reframing vacant storefronts as spaces of visibility, creativity, and opportunity.
A celebration for the work will be held Thursday, June 11, from 5–7 PM at 756 Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Blvd.
Congratulations to all the participating artists and organizations.

Location partners include Paramount Assets, RBH Group, Hanini Group, and Prudential Financial, Inc., all of whom are supporting ongoing downtown revitalization efforts. Installation support was provided by Go Metro Pro. This project was paid for by UEZ.
Additional information about each storefront, featured artist, curatorial theme, and the small business directory is available at cityofcreators.art.
