Day 3 of Pesta Boneka 10 took us across worlds and puppetry in many forms, from clay dolls to wooden blocks, from a bagpipe puppet to forgotten princess and a future shaped by decay. 🌀

🌾 Maati Katha by @tramartstrust has made the Sunderbans came alive through clay dolls and shape-shifting maati, a story of resilience in the midst of fragility.

🧱 Block Theatre performance by @ko_koo_mo at Pule Theatre create endless possibilities through abstract wooden blocks, finished and unfinished at once, growing with every new meaning we imagined.

🎶 Breathood by @topidalmata & @theatre_ash at Bamboo Stage has made an object became a body, and a body became sound. Only when they held hands could they breathe together.

👑 Forgotten Princesses by @lestudio.teatar brought an interactive shadow play about identity, self-acceptance, and the beauty of the inner worlds we all carry.

🦴 Carrion by Justin Talpacido Shoulder @phasmahammer blew everyone’s mind through a surreal, playful vision of transformation as life's only certainty.

Live sketch recap from last week's @pesta_boneka

Thank you for everyone's performances, everyone has done their best to play in-between the imagination and the physical forms, from the humblest of plastics to giant inflatable anemone being, the traditional form and the contemporary abstractions.

⭓ Live Performance

⭔ We look forward to marching alongside you at the Trans March on October 30th and the Taiwan Pride Parade on October 31st :)

‘Syncretic Wilds’ at Monash University Museum of Art 1/2 — Phasmahammer

Curators Amanda Haskard and Pip Wallis present artists Phasmahammer and Natasha Tontey. Both artists imagine worlds in which the human loses its privileged position. Phasmahammer turns the gallery into an animate organism; Tontey turns the animal into a witness, participant and storyteller. One asks us to listen to the breathing world around us. The other asks us to reconsider who has the right to speak within it.

Focusing on Phasmahammer, the artistic persona of Justin Talplacido Shoulder transforms the gallery into a sleeping organism. ‘Hininga’ emerges from a pit of darkness, where bulbous, plant-like forms inflate and collapse as air moves through them, their bodies slowly swelling before sinking back into themselves.

There is a strange sensation that you have entered the resting body of something enormous — a sleeping giant whose parts extend throughout the room. You become conscious of your own movement: what happens if you step on something? Make too much noise? Disturb it? The installation seems to possess a collective nervous system, with each form operating as part of a larger organism rather than as an isolated sculpture.

Hininga means “breath” in Tagalog, referring to the spirit or animating principle of life. Within the animist worldview that informs the work, aliveness is not restricted to the human.

At its quietest, the ambience is dreamlike: cicadas, humid air, the suggestion of a tropical landscape. At other moments, it is unmistakably bodily — a rasping inhale, a laboured exhale, almost like the breathing of someone dependent on oxygen. The sound swells into something overwhelming, disrupting the tranquillity with an intensity that makes the environment impossible to ignore.

Phasmahammer proposes a world in which nature is a network of animate beings with their own presence and agency. The work turns toward animism, ancestry and entanglement. Collapse is not necessarily an ending. It can also be a condition of renewal.

Still thinking on your visit to Pesta Boneka? The 3rd day offers you exciting performances to sit through with your loved ones!

Slide to see what's waiting for you!

In the dangerous and magical land of the Sunderbans – the vast forested delta area in West Bengal (eastern India) and Bangladesh where great rivers combine and split before merging into the Bay of Bengal, a region of extreme ecological and environmental vulnerability - living is about a fragile balance between land and water, forest and field, domestic and wild, human and human, human and non-human, calm and storm. As each stakes claim, as each encroaches upon the other’s space, how does life manage?

The play brings alive the Sunderbans through these clay dolls and the shape-shifting ‘maati’ (clay, mud, soil, earth, land) that not only forms the dolls, but also defines the land and grounds the philosophy of the region. In doing so, Maati Katha invites us to celebrate human resilience in the midst of fragility – a resilience that enables diverse communities to hold together through repeated upheavals of natural calamity and human violence.

Block Theatre is visual and sculptural puppetry play where abstract, geometrical wooden blocks come alive and lead the audience into different worlds supported by puppeteer, music and sound world.

Wooden blocks invite you into a stream of associations. An empty block is full of endless possibilities. A block is both a finished form and an unfinished piece that grows as imagination creates its new meanings.

In Breathood, an object becomes a body, and a body becomes sound. The creature is born from a Possible Father and a Sure Mother through a hypnotic dance, yet it struggles to fulfill its purpose: to make music. That music is the breath of life, embodied in a live bagpipe—an ancient instrument of celebration and mourning, used at weddings, births, funerals, and war.
