One of my favorite parts of photographing dance is being in the room while the creative process is happening.

Rehearsals give me a chance to soak up the creativity, watch ideas take shape, and let that process influence my own work. There are so many stories happening before the curtain ever goes up, and I think they deserve to be documented, too.

That’s one of the things I love most about the @vaildancefest. So many artists, styles, choreographers, and ideas are coming together at once, creating this incredibly unique environment for collaboration and discovery.

Swipe through for a few moments from this summer’s rehearsals that stayed with me.

✨ LOOKING BACK // We’re filled with such fond memories of the last two weeks! Here’s a clip of our 2026 Scholar-In-Residence Audrey Tovar-Dunster with 2021 Scholar-In-Residence Philip Duclos (now a soloist with the Royal Danish Ballet). They took the stage in Balanchine’s Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux as part of Dance for $20.26!

I left Vail feeling inspired, grateful, and absolutely overwhelmed by the sense of community that @heather_watts_watts and @damian_woetzel create. It takes so many people to bring this festival to life, and I loved getting to know each and every one of them!
Learning from new coaches, watching new dancers, and meeting new souls was all so exciting for me as a young dancer. I was blown away by the amount of history that has taken place at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, and having a show almost every night filled my bunhead cup to the brim! I was also astonished by the enthusiasm of the audience. I saw so many familiar faces in the seats, day after day, eagerly waiting with open minds for each night’s program. Without getting too carried away, I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for exposing me to the big, beautiful world of dance. I genuinely feel so blessed to have had this experience. 💙
