My son, Dylan, loves the colour pink. At his school and at home we say “colours are for everyone”. But he can’t help but notice the clothing aisles for girls and the clothing aisles for boys at various retail outlets, signify to him that pink is for girls…and blues/dark colours are for boys. It’s almost impossible in fact, to find my son a jumper that’s pink. Tonight before he fell asleep he asked me when the “pink is for girls” concept started…and why it started…and why PINK?
We looked it up and it turns out that religious iconography and storytelling, for centuries, used blue for the Virgin Mary representing calm, purity and heaven…whilst red was reserved for the Baby Jesus along with male military officials. Red and blue were singled out due to their oppositional impact (visually/psychologically/symbolically). So blue was associated with femininity and red was associated with masculinity. But children, until the early 1900s were generally dressed in white dresses (young boys, too) because it was practical and easiest to bleach. Then in the 1900s pastel shades became a thing in fashion but everyone just wore the colours they liked and “colours were for everyone”. Then in the 1940s the pink for girls and blue for boys became more culturally locked in as a result of corporations looking to simplify mass marketing…it’s still unclear to me why the blue and pink/red associations were reversed from their pre-1900 associations. But it’s a much more recent thing than I had realised 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyway…I’m still looking for a clothing range that accommodates my son. If you know of any good ones, let me know! 🙌
Also - I’m no authority on this topic, I’m presenting you with the sketchy internet research I just happened to do in the last hour, so correct me if/where I’m wrong - but I did take the time to compare two different historical accounts 😅❤️🙏

Every night my children ask me to create a new bedtime story for them - complete with intrigue, death, the supernatural and plot twists (no pressure😅). I’m always knackered at the end of the day, but manage to pull something out of the bag. Then, about two weeks ago, I stumbled upon something that felt immediately compelling, true and like a place I wanted to keep returning to. The boys kept asking to return too - “Give us another chapter of The Cursed Farm!”
The story I created is a kind of rural, folk-horror allegory. And every time I tell it, ideas just flow without effort. As soon as I’d told the boys the first part of “The Cursed Farm”, I could cinematically see it evolve in my imagination, and I realised that it actually forms the visual space for my next album 🙌.
Creating this world has been such a breakthrough moment for me, creatively. For months now, I’ve been songwriting - but kind of…waiting, for something to light the way that I know beyond all doubt is the most meaningful way forward. As ever, I had to wait for my unconscious mind to allow the fragments and themes to surface. And through the allegorical lens of this bedtime story, the pieces of the puzzle - my songs…are starting to fall into place, with a deep, universal, archetypal truth running through the core of the album.
With this breakthrough, I can continue more meaningfully with real ground beneath me…and the sense of being lost at sea in the creative process has disappeared. 🙌❤️😊 xxx

I’ve been a little quiet lately, keeping my head above water with all that’s happening over the summer holidays (had someone steal my identity, attempting to take out a loan in my name, but luckily i’m so broke they didn’t succeed 😂 - every cloud…).
Did anyone see the eclipse? (I know I’m very late to the party with this topic 😅)…I didn’t get any glasses in time but I heard the Lewes Astronomical Society were going to be handing out a few hundred at Seaford beach so my sons and I flocked there. We didn’t manage to get any (it was a sort of dystopian carnage with people trying to grab them as if they were the last drops of water on the Earth - and we were no different 😂). But a very kind families did share their glasses with us (❤️🙏🥳) and we all managed to see the incredible sight. Finn was particularly blown away…when we returned home he said “I think I should make a journal of photos from all the special things we’ve seen. So when I’m older I can look back at everything we’ve done”. ❤️❤️❤️

Running barefoot through the forest, I chase the golden light. The monolith waits as the waterfall claims the scene.

@shifting_voyageur and I escaped town to do this epic journey….in beautiful Wales x

Songwriting has felt nearly impossible lately. Every time I sit down to write, the state of the world crowds out whatever quiet a song needs to arrive. Tonight I gave up trying and just sat with the sea instead.
