Phil Jolley is a British ceramic artist whose work evokes the whispers of history through form and surface. Drawing on themes of time, erosion and chronology, his hand-built stoneware pieces often incorporate moulds from historical inscriptions and found fragments, allowing hidden details to emerge like relics from the past. The texture of the clay and the nuanced interplay of glaze, slip and lustre enhance the sense of worn surfaces and layered memory, inviting viewers to contemplate what remains and what has faded away. Shown: tomb series, Phil takes inspiration from Victorian graveyards, taking moulds as embellishments and creating status through the use of mounted urns. Swipe for End of terraces series showing embellishments inspired by rows of terraced houses in the North of England. Final image: pink and gold embellished cup. A first look at Phil Jolley’s new body of work which is inspired by his home of Stoke on Trent and the urban areas which are full of rows of terraced houses, often sandwiched between industrial factories. His new collection titled, ‘The end of terrace series’ Phil’s latest vessels showcase terraced houses in a variety of stages of decay. The boarding up of windows, peeling paint, roof timbers and collapsed walls all play a part. Often there are patterns and recognisable lines hidden amongst the debris which appear in his works. This January, come and see stunning new landscape paintings by artist @1958jonathansmith Jonathan finds magic in the rivers, chalk-paths, dewponds and hills that he encounters. With this new collection, the bones of Sussex are close to the surface. He has been working from drawings made on the re-established wetlands, capturing rivers which meander through the flood-meadows. Sometimes the colour of a field or patch of woodland will be enough to spark a painting. On other occasions, a new world is unveiled as the morning mist clears. Jonathan is a master of depicting light in his paintings. With his incredible skill, he transports you to these tranquil places. Many thanks to ceramic artist Phil Jolley for joining us at Friday’s DCPG meeting in Kings Langley. Phil generously shared his extensive ceramic knowledge and the thinking behind his distinctive slab-built work. He spoke about layering different clays and developing richly decorated surfaces that evoke archaeological finds and a sense of what might once have been. We learnt how he exploits the interaction between glazes and clay bodies, with stains, oxides and slips playing a crucial role in achieving the final surfaces. An informative and engaging talk on a wintery evening, offering plenty of inspiration and insight into process and material exploration.
