POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Morning Patrol (1986), dir. Nikos Nikolaidis.

Greek art film/post-apocalyptic noir that completely fucks with you in being familiarly strange and strangely familiar.

The characters think in voiceover monologues appropriated (and credited, but surely unauthorized) from Philip K. Dick, Raymond Chandler, Daphne Du Maurier & Herman Raucher, the screenwriter of Summer of '42.

As with so many post-apocalyptic texts, there is an unsafe wilderness bounding a sanctuary city. In the city people still can live in homes and even decorate Christmas trees. Yet the price of being "inside the safety zone" seems to entail being a member of the murderous and paranoid "Morning Patrol", who have a one-a-day quota for offing the Clockwork Orange-ish wildlings who roam the zone.

The protagonist is a feral outsider who penetrates the city and is raped (in a movie theater, having lowered her guard by becoming entranced in watching Rita Hayworth sing "Put the Blame on Mame" in Gilda; the city features many screens and televisions playing many classic movies including The Man With the Golden Arm and The Big Combo).

She then kidnaps a member of the Morning Patrol by stealing the essential medicines that keep him alive... and they begin an amnesiac romance and mutual death pact, trying to again exit the city...

The method -- using alienated and ruined present-day locations to stand in for the future -- recalls Alphaville, THX-1138, and Repo Man -- but the vibe most nearly resembles Stalker (for the absence of sophisticated technologies) and Blade Runner (all that steam and Vangelis-style synthesizer in the score).

Object of pure mystery, in total.

✨ Feeling incredibly grateful for the journey of EUROPA.🚀

This film has continued to find amazing audiences, and I’m so excited to share that EUROPA was an Official Selection at the Long Beach Film Festival 🏆 and recently received awards at both the St. Charles Film Festival and the Philip K. Dick Film Festival. 🤖✨and had the distinct honor of screening at @cufiskeplanetarium as a special screening for this year’s Europa Annual Summit.

Writing and directing this story has been one of the most rewarding creative experiences of my career, and seeing it resonate with audiences and fellow filmmakers is something I’ll never take for granted.

Thank you to every festival programmer, juror, cast member, crew member, and supporter who has believed in this film. Here’s to many more stories—and many more adventures ahead. 🌍🎬💫
