Last week, on HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day, we brought together long-term survivors, advocates, policymakers, and partners for a National Advocacy Roundtable to discuss what it will take to end the HIV epidemic and ensure people living with HIV can age with dignity, health, and support.

I’m reflecting on the resilience, leadership, and courage of those who have lived through every chapter of this epidemic. Long-term survivors are more than witnesses to history. We are movement builders, advocates, caregivers, and leaders whose experiences continue to shape the future of HIV policy, care, and prevention.

As we mark 45 years since the first reports of what would become known as AIDS, we honor those we have lost, celebrate those who are still with us, and recommit ourselves to the work ahead.

Thank you to every long-term survivor who continues to share your story, your wisdom, and your vision for a healthier, more equitable future.

I had the pleasure of capturing the legendary @philltracy’s 70th birthday celebration. 🥂 Being in a room filled with so much influence, legacy, and Black excellence within my community felt like such an honor.

For those unfamiliar, Phil is the founder of the Black AIDS Institute (BAI) since 1999, the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on the Black community. He is a trailblazer in HIV prevention, treatment education and mobilization spanning over four decades of advocacy, helping pave the way for so many. 🙏🏾

I’m deeply grateful that my work continues to place me in rooms across fashion, entertainment, politics, and nonprofit spaces where I’m able to experience and capture culture, impact, and history in real time. It’s a blessing that continues to inspire me to keep building something meaningful of my own! ✍🏾⚡️

As a gay, Black man living with HIV, his lifelong activism rooted in Blackness has been guidance and inspiration for NMAC rooted in communities of color. His visionary offerings to the HIV movement, from leading the Black AIDS Institute, the African American HIV University, the Black HIV/AIDS Strategy, as well as his fearless storytelling, are all gifts for us to learn and build from.
