Feeling incredibly grateful after an amazing week at the @wailukufilmfestival. 🙏🏽 Mahalo to @joshybogle for trusting me to tell your story, and mahalo to @bkrvlogs, @deandre.makakoa, and our community for helping bring it to life.

Huge mahalo to Brian, @ahbobin, @rocktherights, the entire Wailuku Film Festival crew, and @countyofmaui for supporting local storytelling and creating opportunities for Maui filmmakers.

Super Proud of what we’ve created, and excited for what’s next 💯

Two and a half years after the fire, our people are still displaced. The same corrupted extraction of our water continues, and the systems that failed our community on August 8th are still in place.

We try to show up where it matters. At the community level, county council, and the state legislature. But we had an opportunity to take the story to a new level, so we took it to the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Some people think making films or giving speeches doesn’t change anything on the ground, and honestly, we grapple with that pressure and imposter syndrome every day. But our kuleana as filmmakers isn’t to replace the boots on the ground. It is to make sure the voices of our community leaders who are doing the real work in the trenches are heard and understood by the rest of the world.

We used the film to open the door, get the world to look at our story about the fire and the 130 years of resource exploitation that created the conditions for it. We took the momentum of our film Lahaina Rising and used it to put the reality of Lahaina and all of Hawaiʻi in front of decision makers and delegations from all over the world.

This is just the beginning of the impact campaign, where we are trying to use our skills and resources as filmmakers to aid the fight for land and natural resources, and strengthening the power of community.

We’re deeply honored to share that Lāhainā Rising has been officially selected to screen at the inaugural @wailukufilmfestival this June 17–21 in Wailuku Town.

It means so much to see Wailuku growing into a true creative and cinematic hub for Hawaiʻi’s film community. We’ve long needed spaces where local stories, filmmakers, artists, and community can come together and be celebrated here at home.

Our team is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to screen @lahainarising for the Maui community once again. Every screening has carried deep emotion, catharsis, and important conversations around the future of fire preparedness, land and water rights, housing, healing, and community care. We’re honored to continue walking this journey together through film and storytelling.

Festival tickets and the full festival schedule will drop this Wednesday, May 27th. We can’t wait to gather with so many incredible filmmakers for this inaugural festival!

What started out as an idea pitched by @lindsaycarolyn85 to Uncle Bumpy Kanahele @national_sovereignty back in 2016 to begin building international relations for the Nation of Hawai’i by attending the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, has blossomed into a powerful global platform for Hawaiians to tell our stories and build global alliances.

This is kuleana that Uncle Bumpy, Lindsay and I do not take lightly. Every team member that we’ve ever sent and has been accredited to attend the forum representing the Nation of Hawai’i has gone through an extensive training on the legal foundation of Hawaiian national sovereignty as well as training on our strategy of writing speeches, which is very different then how others approach this process. We also teach people what to expect when you get there, from how to register, to how to sign up to speak to even how to save seats.

For us the UN is not our savior, it is a place where we are fulfilling the 4th criteria of an Independent nation under international law which is the ability to exercise foreign relations. But it is also a place to share our stories to not just inspire our indigenous brothers and sisters in the room but to also inspire our people and the next generation of kanaka leaders to know that the indigenous world is eagerly waiting to see how the Hawaiian people will continue to exercise their sovereignty in the coming years.
