Failed Film February Day 13: Moonfall

Spoiler-Free Review: I thought this would be stupid fun that I could enjoy, but it actually annoyed me quite a bit. No doubt movies like this have the ability to be enjoyable, but this one is just bad in a lot of ways. Moonfall follows NASA and a researcher who begin to suspect the moon may be headed for collision with the Earth.

What bothers me most about this movie is that it wants to come off like it knows everything about the universe, even though what you're watching unfold could not be further from unrealistic. It tries to sound so smart with its scientific explanations, essentially attempting to rewrite the textbooks of history. A lot of this just seems so out there and also cliché in that you're dealing with artificial intelligence, so you could probably guess how that narrative is spun.

Of course with any Roland Emmerich movie, or any disaster movie for that matter, you're going to have ridiculous looking cataclysmic events occurring, and they sure are ridiculous here. The fact that characters survive this insanity is comparable to what's shown in the new Fast and Furious movies. There's also so many holes in how the plot progresses with those trying to survive and the ones trying to save the world. The movie uses its resources for nonsensical destruction and leaves little for a cohesive story or memorable characters with any sort of nuance. And of course with any world-saving movie, you have to get that one guy who you saw at the beginning to help you out.

I will however say that I was having a decent time with this for a while at least. Before it plunged into the realm of unrealisticness and trying to be too smart, I found this to be an easy watch that was moving along nicely. I liked how they were making the discoveries about the moon's orbit, how they were getting the information out to the public and trying to determine the best course of action. This in some ways is better than how Don't Look Up displays this reaction to the end of the world. It doesn't linger on the subject for too long, but also effectively showcases the denial, panic, and crime that occurs as a result.
