It’s the last day of January - my birthday month was riddled with some tough moments in the world, despite all intentions to kick it off peacefully. But as my therapist said this week while we talked about the state of things: “self-care is a form of resistance these days.” Indeed this fun glamorous photoshoot with @phodoes was a joyous empowering moment at a much needed time last year. Let it serve as a reminder right now: take a moment through the rage to express yourself, & to take care of yourself. Don’t let the bastards get ya down. ⚡️

My practice mostly consists of making smaller work, with the bulk of my portfolio over the past 4-5 years being tiny 4x4” pieces. So it was refreshing and satisfying to paint a big piece — the largest one I’ve made so far.

I created this in response to an anonymous unsent letter from @unsentlettermailbox, and if you want to hear the letter in full you can visit the timelapse of this piece a couple posts ago. The anonymous writer comments on the vast amount of time we in the modern world spend behind backlit screens “translating 0s and 1s into intoxicating images and sounds.” I think of the vertical scroll. Vertical videos. A hypnotizing, vertical rectangle.
In this piece, vertical panels come together to create one large horizontal landscape. A still, immersive image to meditate on.

My current fixation in art is finding and depicting the Sacred, and I wanted to bring that into this piece as well. The large, 3 panel painting is a subtle nod to the triptychs one mights find in a cathedral. And while most of those contain depictions of saints and religious imagery, this depicts a simple yet glorious scene from a path I often walk.

I’ve begun looking for portals everywhere - bits of magic in the every day. These often show up when the sun hits a patch of grass just right or illuminates a small opening through the leaves. The portal in this piece is unique however, with a whole tree bent perfectly over the creek. I’ve never waded through this portal but have only walked beside it with my eyes fixed on its center. Likewise, the viewer of this piece cannot physically step into the painting. But it does invite them, and the title shows the way.

The last line of the unsent letter is an invitation too:

“I hope you can get outside and feel the breeze.”
