I’m am so proud of my Phoebe for the grades, the diploma, the job she landed and kept, and all the responsibilities she managed along the way. But what I’m most proud of is that she charted her own course. She never needed someone standing over her shoulder reminding her to do the work. She took ownership of her life early and carried herself with a confidence and independence that can’t be taught.

She made decisions because they felt right to her, not because everyone else was doing them. That independence led her back to gymnastics after years away from it, and she accomplished things no one expected—not because she followed a path, but because she was willing to make her own.

She’s kind, generous, and endlessly welcoming (but at the same time she does not suffer fools!) One teacher described her as “subtly hilarious” which feels exactly right. She’s thoughtful without needing attention, confident without needing approval, and she has absolutely no patience for bs. She knows who she is.

Watching her grow into her own person has been one of the great privileges of my life.

Here’s to the next chapter. The world could use more Phoebes in it.
