$WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY For me, photographing dance has always been about more than capturing a beautiful pose. It’s about the relationship between the dancer and everything surrounding them—the landscape, light, movement, colour and fleeting details that make each moment feel connected and alive. The dancer will always be the hero of my image, but I want them to feel part of the world around them, not simply placed in front of it, whacking a leg or hitting a jump. Swipe through to see some of my favourite ways to photograph dance 💃 The beach is never just an empty stretch of sand. I’m watching the tide, the wind, the reflections and the changing light—then considering how the dancer’s movement can work with everything happening around them. The aim is for them to feel immersed within the landscape, not simply placed in front of it. Holi powder brings movement, colour and unpredictability into a photograph. The pose, lighting, direction and timing are all carefully considered—but I still leave space for the powder to create shapes and moments that could never be repeated exactly. It’s controlled chaos, captured in a fraction of a second. Nature gives me far more than a beautiful backdrop. I look for colour, texture, shape and seasonal detail—then consider how the dancer’s movement can connect naturally with everything surrounding them. The aim is for neither the landscape nor the dancer to overpower the other, but for both to become part of the same moment. Sometimes the most important part of a location is what I can shoot through, beneath or between. I use the surroundings to frame the dancer, add depth and create the feeling that you’re looking into a moment rather than simply observing a pose. The environment creates the frame. The dancer completes it. I use architecture, pathways and natural lines to guide your eye through the photograph and towards the dancer. Before taking the shot, I consider where those lines begin, where they lead and exactly where the dancer needs to be placed within them. Nothing is accidental—the entire scene leads you towards the hero. Wind, water, fog and light aren’t simply effects—they become part of the photo$
