It’s September 2, 2026. My middle child, Phoenix, is 19 years old today! Imagine my delight!!! 🎉

When I was 6 months pregnant with Phoenix I was in a near fatal car accident, the only time of consciousness I can recall from the incident was saying to EMS “my baby” and the shock on their faces when I said “I’m pregnant”.

Doctors said I may never come out of the coma, that I may never walk again… that the baby may not make it. But (understandably) they didn’t know me & they didn’t know my Phoenix. 🥹🥰

Since then, this boy and I have always had a connection that’s hard to describe. No words necessary for he and I to know the other person, we just get it. Of course there have been challenges, but the resilience of my son is incredible, his kindness, his intelligence, his empathetic heart, his hilarious personality, the ways he cares for those around him — for those he knows and for those he doesn’t.
Phoenix is the type of person to try it all, give it his all, to learn from his mistakes, to build after loss, to never back down & never quit — & I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Phoenix, today as you said “you’re legal” 😜 and as your dad used to quote the great Stan Lee “with great power comes great responsibility”. You are everything I could ask for in a son, I pray that this year, as you truly step into being a grown-ass-man, you keep God close, you keep your family close & your keep your nose to the ground continuing to build your own legacy. There is greatness beyond measure in your future Phoenix, you have survived so much & were clearly put on this earth for a greater good and purpose; your mom will always be watching from the sidelines of every quarter that the game of life throws your way. Thank you for being the man we all need and the human we all see. Love you boy!

Wow… 18 years old! 📈

There are a million things I can say that complement Phoenix’s strength, intellect, resilience, kindness, humour & incredible heart… but they wouldn’t be enough to truly explain how incredible this guy is or how important he is to me.

Phoenix Cottle, you are my heart. Until infinity.

My prayer is that this year brings you all the happiness, joy, pride & success that you deserve for every year that follows. I love you beyond measure.

Phoenix and I… we just get each other.
We know each other and we see through each other.

We’ve been tough when the other was weak & we’ve been transparent when the other has needed a check-in with reality. Always in ways that strike a chord, but always on the right tune.

There have been moments that we never want to see again, but through those moments, we have seen each other rise to and through the occasions.

When I watched him take this day with such stride, I realized that my baby has become a young man. And we have done a good job.

Thank you to our family and closest friends, for always giving us a soft place to land, without your love and support, none of this would be as beautiful as it has been.

Phoenix, no matter where this path takes you, ride it with class, sass & soul boy…
The hard work isn’t over - respect, discipline & empathy will continue to take you beyond the highest heights!

I’m your biggest fan & your closest ally until infinity is forever & I am so, so proud of you!
