I thought I was bringing a little Savannah hospitality to Phoenix this past Tuesday, but Phoenix had its own plan!

My 50th birthday is next week and I mentioned that in passing before I started speaking. The next thing I know, over 100 people are singing Happy Birthday to me. I couldn’t believe it (and you can see my surprise)!

There really couldn’t have been a more perfect start to the program since I was there to talk all about how much the way we make people feel matters.

And @hsmaiaz & @phoenixnace made me feel pretty freaking special!

(I promise you that I’m not going to forget standing in front of a room while 100+ people I just met sang to me.)

And that’s the point! We remember how people made us feel.

We want people to choose us, book us, hire us, refer us, say yes to our ideas. But before we can influence any of that, they have to trust us.

So we talked about building trust through how we show up and why trying so hard to impress people can get in the way of it and learned what changes when we shift our focus from ourselves to how others are experiencing us.

And I couldn’t have asked for a better group to have this conversation with! Hospitality and event professionals who already know how much the experience matters... when someone walks into a hotel or attends an event or sits down for a meal. Hearing their reactions to bringing this same thinking into sales and marketing as a blast!

HUGE thanks to Phoenix NACE & HSMAI AZ for inviting me to spend time with your communities (and to @ariannaregina & @mikayla.n.todd for recommending me). And to everyone who came out ready to participate, talk to each other, and look at things a little differently.

And of course a ton of gratitude to the board members, sponsors, host, photographer, emcee, entertainment... everyone who made this happen (@amhazeme, @pjs.flowers, @fgordonmurray, Town & Country Event Rentals, @marktaylorplays, Ryan Thomas, @darwinmann1 (President of NACE Phoenix), and @yvettekoebkeart (President of HSMAI AZ)).

NO better way to kick off the next decade!

And Savannah, I think we’ve got a little competition in the hospitality department!

This year’s NACE Experience Conference Opening Reception, hosted by @nacefoundation at the House of Blues New Orleans, was a night to remember!

From delicious local bites and sponsored beverages to live local jazz bands and DJs, the energy was incredible from start to finish. Best of all, the evening also served as a fundraiser supporting the NACE Foundation.

Such a fun night celebrating, connecting, and giving back!

Are you the ONE?⁣
⁣
Dearest gentle reader... I was not.⁣
⁣
I found out I was a nominee for a NACE ONE Speaker of the Year award. I flew to NOLA to spend time at @nacenational 2026 and on Tuesday I got all dolled up, grabbed a glass of champagne... and toasted the winner, @nicolevbenvenutti.⁣
⁣
And I could have just not told you that.⁣
⁣
None of you have been sitting around thinking about my nomination and wondering what the outcome was. So it would have been easy to say nothing.
⁣
But, I’ve said that one of the boldest things I do is go after what I want publicly. ⁣
⁣
And I definitely celebrate publicly when I get it. (I shared about Smart Meetings’ Speaker Award before I even finished reading the article!)⁣
⁣
But if I only share the wins, you’d think things go my way more than they actually do. I get told no a lot more than I get told yes!⁣
⁣
So, when the NACE 2026 Speaker of the Year was announced, I cheered my head off for Nicole and then went to the gala and danced my butt off!⁣
⁣
Because when someone gives that much to the catering and events industry, the rest of us get to work in a better industry for it! ⁣
⁣
Sure, I wanted to win & I felt disappointment when I didn’t. I’m human. There were a couple of things this week I really wanted that I didn’t get. And I got opportunities I’ve been working on for a while! ⁣
⁣
And I celebrate it all because it started the same way... me deciding to go for something. That’s the win, no matter which way it goes.⁣
⁣
I’m not a caterer/event prof. I’m on the periphery of that industry. But these incredible members, chapters, leaders... accepted me as if I was a longtime member. It’s a community where people want everyone to win and I heard that every time a winner was announced.⁣
⁣
So, I didn’t get the award, but between the conversations, connections, fun (and I mean, that food!), it was absolutely one of my favorite nights of the year! ⁣
⁣
Congratulations, Nicole! I loved learning all you’re doing for NACE and the industry!⁣
⁣
What are YOU going after right now? ⁣
⁣
Drop it in the comments and let yourself be seen trying. I just spent a week cheering people on and I’m not done yet, so let me hear it!
