On this day 17 years ago, NASCAR borewitnessed the epitome of Talladega. From drama, to big wrecks, bad blocks, & a story too-hard to believe, it was an experience you had to endure. This is when lore meets chaos.

Let me tell you the story of when you could blame events on nature’s conniving ways.

-

BACKGROUND: This was post-peak NASCAR. The recession hit, fewer fans watched, & teams merged left-&-right. Despite a decrease from ‘08, 8.1 million viewers on FOX & 142K attendees zoned-in on the 2.6-mile Talladega Superspeedway.

-

THE RACE ITSELF: It was the Aaron’s 499, Juan Pablo Montoya & Greg Biffle lead the way! The early going was intense, the 43-car grid immediately went 3-wide to start. Before you know it, The Big One struck. Over 20 cars were involved, taking-out massive names like Mark Martin& Jeff Gordon. Things settled after but the racing still provided action.

Kyle Busch & Dale, Jr. took turns at the top, so did Denny Hamlin. Montoya still had pace, & Jimmie Johnson. One Chevy was of interest— The Phoenix Racing Impala of Brad Keselowski, in the 09 making his 5th Cup start. He had flashpoints & always found trouble but avoided it.

-

BANG: Late in the going, the 2nd big-one happens right behind the 09. Montoya + Johnson spark it. This sets-up a frantic sprint, some drivers opting to tandem as the COT platform allowed for that. Ryan Newman’s help from Matt Kenseth was first, then Keselowski found a partner— Carl Edwards, who’d been anonymous the entire race.

Carl & Brad FLEW their way to the lead by lap 200, now with Jr. pushing Newman. The 39 & 88 were sponsored by the US Military. As it turns-out, the indigenous people the US rooted from here, the Seminole, moved to Florida. They could go no further, & fought the US to survive. They’d later become the Miccosukee Tribe, & got into NASCAR with Phoenix Racing. THEY WERE ON BRAD’S CAR AT THEIR OLD STOMPING GROUND!

-

Brad went for a move out of 4. Carl blocked, but Brad couldn’t risk a penalty. He could go no further. HE HOLDS HIS GROUND AS THE 99 FLIES & FIZZLES INTO THE FENCE LIKE A CLARITIN PILL!

-

Brad Keselowski won this race.

His 1st.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Kurt Busch had a reputation of making every team he drove for better. Nowhere was that more obvious than when he spent a year at Phoenix Racing in 2012 and almost carried James Finch's No. 51 to victory at Sonoma.

Busch ran down Clint Bowyer in the final laps and was all over him when he clipped a stack of tires, which caused the trackbar to break. Driving with the rear end of his car flopping all over the place, he finished third anyway in what remains maybe the greatest display of his sheer driving ability.

A forgotten part of Busch's Phoenix Racing arc is that two weeks after this, he won a Nationwide race at Daytona in similarly heroic fashion with a car that was smashed to bits.

May 29th, 2011, the Coca-Cola 600. On lap 295 on the frontstretch, Landon Cassill would come down on Regan Smith. This would cause Cassill to spin and slide through the grass, catching air with his splitter digging into the ground. Kevin Harvick would go on to win the race.

Before we close out the year, this deserved a permanent spot. @jamessfinch earned a P5 in the Snowball Derby, his best Derby finish yet! When you’re comfortable in the seat, performance follows.
