Perception, is a live-action and animated film set in Johannesburg, following 18-year-old Ace, who escapes the harsh realities of addiction into an imagined world where he experiences the life he wishes he had.

Earlier this week, I learned that my mentor and dear friend, Susan Barnes, joined the ancestors. There aren’t words for the gratitude I feel for catching her during her final act.

Susan found me in one of the darkest times of my life and became my closest confidante. She guided me through my early career with joy, irreverence, and a deep love of the craft. For a decade we had two-to-three-hour phone calls, shared joints (she rolled the tightest!), and laughed until it hurt.

Susan was a true journeyman actor. She was in everything. You’d recognize her in some of your favorite films (Speed, Repo Man, They Live, Scrooged, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure) and TV shows (Laverne & Shirley, Mama’s Family, Growing Pains). She came to LA at the encouragement of Agnes Moorehead, became an Academy member, was an early figure at Sundance Institute, and appeared in the very first workshop performances of Angels in America.

Susan was always a phone call away. She gave me tough love and a perspective that comes from having a full, rich life behind her. She was my fiercest cheerleader and toughest critic. I’ve lost many folks in my life but in a way I don’t feel like I will ever lose Susan. Her philosophy and wisdom will stay with me til the end of my days.

As I start rehearsals for the biggest production of my career at The Public, I hear her voice in my head: “Just focus on the work. That’s all that matters.”

Maw, this next one’s for you. I know you’re smiling wherever you are.
