Wyoming 26’ Season was one to remember!

The season started out different from the get go this year. I was living in Cheyenne Wy at the beginning of the season, and in May I had an unplanned move to Huntsville AL. Not the most conducive place for hard climbing in the summer. Although, less than ideal, I was determined not to let it get in the way of my summer goals and lifestyle. I made a commitment to myself to not let the location I lived during the week slow me down. Every other weekend all summer long, on Friday afternoons, I flew from Huntsville to Denver and then drove to Lander. Needless to say I probably had the longest commute to the crag out of all my friends! Although I felt like a “local” when I was in Lander, it was shadowed by the fact that I’d have to commute back half way across the country starting Sunday evening to be back at work on Monday.

Thankfully, there were some successes from my efforts and a day before my 32nd birthday I sent my long term (1.5 season long) project Rodeo Free Europe. All the travel, all the training, all the blood, sweat, skin I had lost over the last season and a half was worth it to send this amazing route! If only I had found my new beta a year ago..maybe I would of lost a little less of all the above lol

Unfortunately, even though I had some of the highest of highs this summer, I also had some of the lowest of lows. On my drive home from my annual Lander Birthday trip I had a stroke, and thus spent several days in the hospital and was diagnosed with a heart condition. Which also required surgery to repair to prevent future strokes from occurring.

Thankfully, during the time between diagnosis and the procedure I was still able to continue to go to Wyoming and climb. It’s what I needed, it kept me whole, and my community up there truly helped me through the hard times. Although, I wasn’t climbing as hard as I was pre stroke, I still had enough juice left in the tank to tick off some other fun routes too, literally up until the day before my heart surgery.

Even though there were ups and downs this summer, it helped me realize how blessed and thankful I am to have amazing friends, and a strong/resilient body.

Moody Evenings at The Iris

My last trip to Wild Iris for the season was exactly one month ago. It was also the day before I had my heart procedure. On Sunday, the day before my Heart Surgery, I sent this route, an awesome 13B/8a called Cow Regge! This route eluded me for several years. One that I had climbed on “a lot” but never really put any effort into it. It was always the route I got on after I had sieged on Rodeo Free, and never had the skin, nor the power to do it at the end of the session or weekend.

After I sent Rodeo Free, I made it a point to do this route next. Although, significantly easier than Rodeo Free, it was still giving me lots of problems. Largely due to the fact that my fingers wouldn’t fit very well into a key pocket. I could get 1/4 pad of my index and 3/4 pad of my ring into it, and it was way to baggy to take as a mono. This this route literally felt harder than Rodeo Free for alittle while. Then I tried some non standard beta, that was different than any conventional method I had ever seen before.

This new beta made the moves easier in my opinion, (I’m able to take the pesky pocket with the opposite hand with a better finger orientation) but the trade off was it made for a challenging clip and it skips the rest on the route. That being said, I still felt the grade was appropriate. I’m glad to have this one off the list, and can now move on to the many link-ups that finish on Cow Regge next year!

Fue too much y estaba al limite. Demasiados dolores.
