🧂Salt water is hypertonic, so it draws water out of the cortex by osmosis, and dehydrated hair has less tensile strength and more friction between strands, which is where the tangling and mid length breakage come from.

✨ Chlorine oxidises and strips sebum, the cuticle scales lift, and hair becomes porous, which is why every subsequent day of a holiday does more damage than the one before. The green tint is copper, which sits in most pool water from algaecides and old pipework, is oxidised by chlorine and binds to keratin in hair that has already been made porous, which is why it shows on lighter and bleached hair first.

☀️UV breaks the disulphide bonds in keratin and oxidises melanin at the same time, which is why hair both lightens and loses its strength, and there is no living cell in the shaft to repair any of it.

🫶The order I use things in is oil before I swim, Dream Coat on damp hair before drying, then the Phyto Colour shampoo once a week and the Nioxin range for my scalp. Soak your hair in fresh water before you get into the sea or the pool, because a strand that is already saturated has far less capacity to take on salt, chlorine or copper.
