And I am the Arrow is about the many ways a person can be wounded: by what is done to them, by what is said, and by what everyone chooses not to say. Pia Ghosh-Roy writes about trauma, silence, and family in a way that feels almost too intimate, like reading someone’s private grief. It made me think about all the things we carry without knowing, the secrets, and the quiet ways both spoken words and silence have their own distinct ways of damaging us.

It forced me to sit with my own memories, thinking about how childhood isn't always something we leave behind; sometimes it’s something we just learn to carry around quietly. We grow up around adult silences, absorbing their unspoken rules long before we even have the words to ask what happened.

Throughout the book, I kept wondering how much of our present lives -- the way we love, the way we retreat, the way we handle conflict -- is just an echo of old, unaddressed wounds. How often do we protect ourselves by staying silent, only to realize the silence itself is doing the breaking?

In each page of the book, sometimes in each line, I sat with this heavy grief that looked like a table weight with faux snow. Grief over losing who you were, grief over not talking enough, or talking too much, grief over loving and losing, grief over not loving and staying, and the fragile weight of not being loved like we want to. Everything glossed over with the shimmer of faux snow that is hope and love of all kinds.

And I cannot not talk about Pia’s prose. It is strikingly poetic and made me gasp for breath in several parts. This is one of my most annotated books. She slips between tenderness and devastation so effortlessly. She has easily become an author whose each book I will read.

Families tell stories about themselves. They also leave things out. Pia Ghosh-Roy’s debut novel, And I Am the Arrow, follows Mishu back to Chatterjee Mansion in Calcutta, where her grandmother Niyoti lies in a coma. Coming home means looking again at the people she grew up with, and discovering how much of their lives she has never known.

Around Mishu are her mother Ira and Bani, whose years in the household have made her essential without erasing the distinctions of class. Each woman gradually claims space in the story. Ghosh-Roy talks about how her characters surprised her as she wrote, particularly Ira, who grew beyond the quiet, accommodating woman she had first imagined.

The novel careens through Calcutta, London and New York, with a ghost called Opor/Neech helping readers travel through its shifting times. Writing him gave Ghosh-Roy room to play with language and bring the conversational pleasure of adda onto the page. Chatterjee Mansion remains the place the story returns to, holding its arguments and the memories its inhabitants carry differently.

In conversation with Shireen Quadri, Ghosh-Roy considers the “unspokens” families pass down and how experiences that predate us can shape our own lives. She also asks how much we can ever know about someone, however close we are to them.

And I Am The Arrow began with an image. A collage, really. Of a granddaughter, a grandmother, some old letters, a journey. What began as a story about Mishu, the granddaughter, and Niyoti, her grandmother, grew into a many-armed story of women across generations, with each of them wanting to have a say. For Pia Ghosh-Roy, the intimate relationships of women hold multiplicities: strength and softness, openness and stealth, care and coercion. Set in Calcutta, a city whose cadence she carries in her bones, the novel also became a way of engaging with death, asking what it means to disappear and whether death is absolute. Ten years in the making, And I Am The Arrow allowed Ghosh-Roy to listen to her characters, letting the women lead, some loud and some quiet, while exploring the space between ourselves and everything else. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.
I'm fully numb after finishing this book. How is it possible that a book can break and build you at the same time?

I thought that this book had a spooky element and I'm about to be entertained by it. Lol, little did I know 😂. No, this isn't a horror story, not in the traditional sense. But yes, it IS indeed a horror story filled with ghosts - of people, thoughts, grief, regret and all the searing pain of survival, loving and living. AHH THE HORROR OF BEING ALIVE!! We fear death all our lives, but it is peace. The place that Opor/Neech, the ghost narrator of this story, calls as Where We Am, or WWA or Wah. It is the living, The Other Place, that is the real battlefield, the Kurukshetra, the place of relentless horrors. This is a story of Niyoti choosing (and damning?) her own fate, Bani (Shibani) sharing her true bani (story), Ira saving her daughter by saving herself, Mishu finding herself as a story within her loved ones' stories and Rathin the boy, the man, the body, whose life was an amalgamation of so many types of loves and expectations, where his own (his own final truth!) couldn't find the permanent safety of a home.

And of course, there's Boombody. Us. You. Me. A body which is still booming with energy and words in The Other Place. For the first time in my life, I found a place inside someone's story indefinitely. Thank you Opor Neech, for this immense honour, বন্ধু!

This book isn't just a book to me at this moment, it's a whole universe (or you-niverse, Rathin?). I feel like I've spent a whole lifetime with this book. (Contd ⬇️)
