Degree Show is open! Sentimental ramble incoming!

My work exists because of people. Because of people who choose to listen and people who don’t. Because the space that exists between us is often silent and very loud. Vast and incredibly close. Because I’ve had to unlearn a lot of quietness. My work exists because I existed. Because I was a girl once and I am still alive. Because the only thing I know how to do is what I’ve always done. My work exists because vulnerability is innately human. And stifling vulnerability is intrinsically learned. Because we need to show each other more of ourselves.

My work also exists because so many people existed as reminders that I am allowed. Shania, Deborah, Damien and Eóin were my constants and the sounding boards for words I couldn’t find. Haze and the Poetry Society were the space to give love and receive it. Each and every one of my friends were a soft and cozy place time and time again. I shared a room with 22 other artists who cared so deeply for their making and the artists around them.

They say it takes a village and (not to be bias or anything but) I have the best village in the entire world.

Congratulations to all of the very talented graduates whose work I had the pleasure of visiting today. The depth of talent we have in Limerick City is not to be underestimated, and no more so than the talent pool in the Limerick School of Art and Design. The need to retain and support this talent in our city is important to its vitality, diversity and economy.

I am very impressed by the exclusive ceramics commission for @guji_coffeebar - generous and impactful initiative across sectors.

INTERIM - Shania Sampson

INTERIM welcomes the term ‘the dark’ in both the literal and figurative sense, through abstract expressive forms considering what that phrase may hold for each one of us, or even possibly what it may not. Investigating a world in between what we know and the
unknown, a vast expanse filled with great uncertainty for a future seemingly unpredictable. A stagnant space bordered between the mundane, a space where we
can’t be sure what can’t exist.

The exhibition aims to question how we capture ‘the dark’, this thing that many fear and some survive, how can we convey and even further explore this, what does this look like or what should it look like?

Through intricate printmaking techniques, sculptural forms and sound INTERIM is visualised as an isolating unidentified place, where the real and the imaginary blend what we understand as separate into one. A liminal space with a sense of uncertainty and ambiguity, this flux of absence and presence that brings us more questions than answers. Allowing us to encounter a space without defining, nor affirming, nor denying anything, but instead through providing us with an experience.

Shania Sampson:
"Shania Sampson is a current 3rd Year LSAD student specialising in Print and Contemporary Practice. Her work explores illustrative storytelling, taking its shape through a developing personal style and guided by a focus on emotional experiences related to her own life, in the past and present."

Sofia Savina:
"I’m a non-binary artist based in Limerick. I paint, write and make zines that are inspired by folklore and fairytales while remaining
grounded in social values such as anti-fascism. My zines contain poetry, illustrations and digital collages relating to grief, queer lives, political activism, and Gothic and otherworldly landscapes."

Stephen White:
"Stephen is an artist based in Limerick that creates zines using political commentary and photography, alongside digital art. The zines try to navigate societal complexities and shortcomings, while digital works extend his inner dialogue. Stephen's art aims to spark dialogue and inspire change, inviting viewers on a journey of exploration."

Our first season has come to an end and we’re feeling very sentimental. Very thankful to all of you who have listened, all the conversations around what had been discussed on our episodes, those of you who shared the feelings of relatability or motivation or inspiration after listening to an episode, anyone who sent a message or took the time to let us know their thoughts.

Sometimes as artists, we feel far too close to our own work to take a step back and remember that there’s a whole community of other artists who are there to listen or talk or help. This podcast has existed as our reminder that the space is very vast and very much there. We’re feeling especially grateful to all our wonderful guests. Not only are these people some of our favourite artists but also some of our favourite people. People we feel influenced by and inspired by, people whose thoughts and ideas and lives as artists are ones we felt needed to be shared. All these lovely people so deserving of so much more than just an hour to talk about their work.

To be honest, we started this podcast mainly to have an excuse to sit and listen, but it has become so much more than we had first imagined. Making art is vulnerable, sharing art is vulnerable, and sitting for an hour and talking about that art while being recorded requires so much care. It feels so lovely to know we have created a space where people felt comfortable enough to share (even when it sometimes took some convincing!). Not only are we glad that so many others have the opportunity to learn from and about these people, but we are also glad that we have a little snippet of our relationships with them recorded to look back on for so many years to come.

Season two will be coming very soon!
