POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Today my album “Every Little Fire” is released into the world. I sometimes think about how the role of the artist is to light a torch which is then thrown into the collective void that it may illuminate the surroundings briefly and provide some hope, light and direction to those who witness it, before it is eventually swallowed by the great nothingness. One torch by itself only providing so much light but collectively the illumination is powerful. And so here I stand about to release this torch from my grip, that it may be taken by the natural forces, that it may lessen the shadows, that it may twinkle in the eyes of those who have come to watch the cascade of all these little fires.

This album is an outward expression of all the life I’ve lived over the last 5-6 years, and so spans Covid, babies, old houses, new houses, international moves, new lives, loss, grief, love, fatigue. It’s sat in the background patiently watching me as I ran around like a madman, an actually insane person, trying to get some purchase on his own life. It waited until, in my not knowing what do to do next, I would pick up a guitar, or notepad or sit at the keyboard. It was in no rush to finish itself. It helped me find and remember the joy in making, the child-like satisfaction in a creative process (and not the product). It helped me remember that I have something to say.

Thank you as always for your love and support of this project, and for reminding me of your love and support when I often forget it, and for the messages of how the music has helped you in some way, being a soundtrack to your joys and griefs. This music is yours now x

A huge thank you to all the beautiful, creative, generous souls who gave of themselves in contribution to this music. Co-pro Chris Hyson, drums Lloyd Haines, bass Antoine Katz, BVs Georgia Potter, Jordan White, flute Luis Almau, strings Zac Barter, artwork Van Bartel, Myka Wallace, Simoen Van Der Meent.

🍊 #1 Dads “Every Little Fire”, coming out in full on ltd ed burnt orange vinyl next month. Just added to our website for Pre-Order > Out 16.10 @tomiansek @pieaterpieater . Solo tour happening October/November :)

TOM IANSEK HAS LIVED A LOT OF LIFE IN RECENT YEARS. ONE HALF OF BIG SCARY AND NO MONO, THE INDEPENDENT PRODUCER AND SONGWRITER HAS RETURNED TO #1 DADS, HIS SOLO PROJECT, FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2020’S GOLDEN REPAIR.

IN THAT TIME, IANSEK HAS BECOME AN ACTUAL #1 DAD TO TWO YOUNG CHILDREN AND RELOCATED HIS FAMILY FROM MELBOURNE/NAARM TO LONDON. “IT HAS BEEN AN INSANE, WONDERFUL, CHAOTIC, INTENSE AND JOYFUL PERIOD OF MY LIFE,” HE SAYS. “AND THIS ALBUM HAS BEEN BORN OF THESE EXPERIENCES, IN
DIRECT AND INDIRECT WAYS.”

PIECED TOGETHER IN SMALL DIY STUDIOS BETWEEN COMMITMENTS AS A PARTNER AND FATHER IN A NEW COUNTRY, EVERY LITTLE FIRE WRESTLES WITH THE REALITIES OF CARVING OUT PEACE AND STRUCTURE AMID
UPHEAVAL.

FROM THE POCKET-SIZED MOTOWN OF ‘ALREADY SOMETHING’ TO THE SLOW-BURNING DRAMA ‘LOVE NO LIGHT’ AND SOFT, NEW WAVE TOUCHES TO ‘NOTHING LESS’ AND ‘POST CARD’, THE RESULTS HUM WITH #1 DADS’ SIGNATURE SONIC INTIMACY, UNDERSTATED INNOVATION AND LYRICAL HONESTY.

“WHILE THE SONGS WERE BORN OF FIRE, THE ALBUM - OVER TIME - BECAME A TRANQUIL PLACE FOR ME,” SAYS IANSEK. “AS THE MONTHS AND YEARS MAKING THIS MUSIC BLED INTO ANOTHER, AND I LOST TOUCH WITH THE RABID NEEDINESS TO FINISH THINGS QUICKLY AND SHOW THE WORLD, THE RECORD BECAME MOSTLY ABOUT ME SPENDING TIME DOING WHAT I LOVE MOST.”

WORKING WITH LONDON-BASED MUSICIAN CHRIS HYSON AND LONG-TERM COLLABORATORS LIKE GUS RIGBY, GEORGIA POTTER AND ISAAC BARTER, IANSEK PRODUCED AND MIXED EVERY LITTLE FIRE, ANIMATING THESE SONGS WITH TORCHLIT PIANO, LUSH STRINGS, UNDERSTATED GUITARS AND HIS OWN
MASTERFUL WHISTLE AND COMMAND OF MELODY.

AT THE CENTRE OF EVERY LITTLE FIRE IS A VOICE THAT CAN BE OBSTINATE OR APOLOGETIC, FILLED WITH GRIEF OR GRATITUDE, BUT MORE OFTEN REACHES FOR HOPE. IT’S THE SOUND OF AN ARTIST ASKING HIS NEAREST AND DEAREST TO HAVE A LITTLE FAITH - TO SEE THE POSSIBILITY OF ADVENTURE, RATHER THAN ONLY THE HARDSHIP OF CHANGE
