.
This new project to the rear of a Victorian home for the owner of a Welsh clothing label creates a minimal, unified space for cooking, living and dining.

Absolutely delighted to announce that the first issue of Alder is out now.

Alder is as much about landscape, patterns of life, materials, colours and politics as it is about singular buildings or art objects. It’s a record of new work by individuals who engage seriously with place and tradition to better understand what’s necessary and possible - rather than as ornament or adornment.

You can purchase a copy by following the link in our bio.

Alternatively, you can purchase a copy in person from the MAFA office. Please contact us directly through Instagram or by email to arrange.(Alder@maryarnold-forster.co.uk)

A list of stockists will be available shortly.

Material, light, and proportion are the focus for this home 😍 @benjaminhale.co.uk have introduced a side return and a series of ‘garden rooms’ to unlock the ground floor of a beautiful Victorian property.

This project to the rear of a Victorian home in the Pen y Lan conservation area aims to create a unified space for dining and cooking, placing an emphasis on reconnecting the existing internal spaces to the garden.

A new modest extension along the side return provides a new space for preparing food and an opening made in the existing wall connects the kitchen to a new larger dining space. A wall of joinery provides ample storage and an elemental rhythm along the length of the room. A new picture window is inserted, puncturing the joinery on the return to frame views of a refurbished garden.

All new joinery, doors (cat flap) and windows are designed in collaboration with a local carpenter and the Architect.

Thank you @piercescourf for these lovely new photos on a crisp morning of our project Shepherdess Walk completed in 2015

The Shepherdess Walk plot was once home to the UK’s first HIV clinic, housed in a 1980s building that was subjected to bomb attacks amidst public hysteria. The area is characterised by a mix of styles from ornate late-Victorian buildings to 1950s low-rise housing. The site sits on the corner of Shepherdess Walk and Wenlock Street and complements its Victorian neighbours both in scale and materiality. The choice of Belgian brick evokes the colour of London Stock.

Shepherdess Walk is a Solidspace development with Jazzed zein architects, consisting of five apartments and three terraced houses all designed with the split-level Solidspace DNA inside. The project has been widely published and was one of the 40 shortlisted projects for the biennial Mies van der Rohe Award, the most prestigious prize in European architecture.
