TURN PAIN INTO ACTION. 🇭🇹

A few days ago, I shared the story of @pierre_d_bel_7 Afterward, the @haitianbridge reached out to me and asked if I would help turn the attention surrounding Pierre’s story into action.

I said yes.

S. 4814 is legislation that would designate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately three years.

Here is something you can do TODAY:

If your senator has NOT cosponsored S. 4814:

“Hi, my name is ______ and I’m a constituent from ______. I’m calling to ask Senator ______ to cosponsor and support S. 4814, which would designate Temporary Protected Status for Haiti for approximately three years. Please support this legislation and help move it forward. Thank you.”

If your senator ALREADY cosponsors S. 4814:

Pierre Damas Bel was a 20-year-old Haitian immigrant, honors graduate, JROTC cadet, college student, beloved son and brother who dreamed of becoming a doctor.

After ICE placed a GPS monitor around his ankle, his family says Pierre became increasingly distressed and humiliated. On August 31, he died in what his family believes was suicide. Authorities are investigating, but we cannot ignore the human cost of policies built on fear, surveillance and dehumanization.

Ohio needs action, not condolences after another family is shattered.

🇭🇹💔 20-Year-Old Haitian Graduate Dies by Suicide in Ohio After Losing TPS

The Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio, is mourning the loss of Pierre Damas Bel ( @pierre_d_bel_7 ), a 20-year-old recent Springfield High School graduate who dreamed of continuing his education and pursuing his passion for soccer. ⚽🇭🇹

Bel had recently lost the protection he received under Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and was required by immigration authorities to wear a GPS ankle monitor.

According to his family, the monitoring became a significant source of emotional distress. Bel had also spoken publicly about the shame and humiliation he said he experienced while wearing the device.

🗣️ “I came to this country to pursue my education. I didn’t come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone.”

He questioned how he could continue his education and college soccer career while being required to wear a GPS monitor.

His father, Pierre Ronal Bel, said his son had been struggling and that they spoke shortly before his death. He encouraged Pierre to come home so they could spend time together, eat and talk.

Pierre later died after entering Interstate 70 near South Vienna, Ohio, where he was struck by a semi-truck. His death has been confirmed as a suicide.

Pierre’s life was much more than the circumstances of his death. He was a student, soccer player, son, and young Haitian who came to the United States hoping to build a future. 🇭🇹❤️

His story has renewed concerns about the emotional toll that immigration enforcement measures can have on young people and families facing uncertainty.
