Counting down until temps are hovering in the 60s to plant my fall annuals.

Sharing some of my favorites for zone 8a with part shade. I love all of these for my containers since I stick with perennials in my beds.

1. Ornamental Cabbage - I love how full these are, though they tend to get leggy by the end of winter.

2. Violas - Similar to pansies and very hardy. No need to deadhead these!

3. Periwinkle - Such a pretty, dainty filler for your containers.

4. Coral Bells (Heuchera) - Can’t get enough! They come in the most stunning variety of colors.

5. Ornamental Kale - These also get leggy in part shade by the end of winter, but I love the variety they bring.

Stay tuned to see what I plant!

Giving our front porch a little English garden charm this fall. 🍂🤎

Decided to switch things up from my usual mums this year, mostly because I can never seem to keep them alive for very long. 😂 Loving all the rich colors and textures in these arrangements!

Next up… the pumpkins! 🎃

Swipe to learn how I grew a Monarch Haven….

#pollenatorgarden
#butterflyhighway

#milkweedformonarchs

I got a Milkweed plant from a native plant sale last year. I learned that it is the only thing monarchs lay their eggs on. After watching Monarchs go through their lifecycle, I was hooked. So I saved the seeds and here we are!

They were in full bloom by June/July!
•
Next year I’m planting more native milkweed in a variety of colors!

Despite having flowers all summer, evidence of the lifecycle didn’t begin to show until August/September

All summer and into the fall I was at war with the aphids who take the nutrients out of the plant. Thankfully @pikenurseries sell ladybugs who helped me fight them off

How many caterpillars do you see?
•
After not seeing any caterpillars for what seemed like weeks, one night I went out and saw over 25….the next day they were gone!

Turns out they weren’t gone, they just moved onto the next phase of their lifecycle

The metamorphosis will never not amaze me

Ranger was also in awe
•
My sweet boy passed a week after this. In some cultures monarch butterflies are believed to be connected to the afterlife. Seeing them continue to emerge since he’s been gone always brings a smile

This one needed a rescue from the lawn crew while its wings were still drying

How could you not love this.

I don’t think I’ll never not plant milkweed

Check out @ncwildlifefed to learn more about the butterfly highway!
