what often gets lost is just how central generosity, hospitality, and sharing food are to muslim culture. everyone wants to villainize us, meanwhile we’re just trying to make sure everybody ate (and had seconds, thirds, and a box to take home too).

I had the pleasure of cooking for such an incredibly warm and talented group, hosted by @arshraziuddin (who always knows how to bring people together in the best way), with @kashifmanifesto and @pillarsfund. the menu was a mix of some of my iftar favorites, reimagined: purple potato chaat, garlic chive bolani with tomato curry leaf chutney, akkawi cheese rolls with honey & aleppo pepper, brown butter labneh with colorful crudites, goat yakhni pulao, pepper dolma in tomato broth, shami kebabs with date tamarind chutney, and for dessert, basque cheesecake with citrus curd and orange blossom poached rhubarb alongside big platters of ma’amoul from @zahle_bakery & mint fennel tea.

cooking for others, especially during ramadan, and sharing so many special dishes is always such an honor. shoutout to my sister @nadiawasti who was in town and helped (aka was forced to) me all weekend.

Just sharing a little recap from our incredible show, Detroit Red, last month. I am thankful to all that’s holy that we were able to manifest this in Detroit. And thanks to everyone who showed up and shared this sold out show with us. As a culture creator, I am motivated in telling our stories that shed light beyond the headlines of our leaders and culture bearers. God willing, coming to a city near you

On March 7, 2026, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture hosted its first Ramadan Iftar — honoring the legacy and living tradition of Black Muslims in America.

From Qur’anic recitation to congregational prayer, from jazz-inspired spiritual music to a table filled with the foods of our community — bean pie, fried whiting, black-eyed peas, cornbread, mac & cheese, and yams — the evening reflected the beauty of Black American Muslim tradition.

Highlights included:

• Qur’anic recitation by Swiyya Haqq
• Musical reflections by Mumu Fresh
• Adhan by Imam Buheira Abdu’s-Sabour
• Congregational prayer led by Imam Johari Abdul-Malik
• Remarks by Dr. Su’ad Abdul-Khabeer and Dr. Besheer Mohamed
• A film series by Muslim filmmakers in the Oprah Winfrey Theater

Curated by Dr. Erika Gault
Co-sponsored by CSAARL, the Pillars Fund, and the Lilly Endowment.

A historic moment on the National Mall.

We are the answer to our ancestors’ prayers.

Grief, culture and comedy with some of my favourite people. I JUST WANNA CREATE SOME ART WITH THEM

🎤much love hosting a fireside chat talking culture With Riz Ahmed and Aneil Karia as the first South Asian Shakespearean verse Hamlet on screen … ever.

🤍 Also got to cry and laugh at the same time at the Ramy and Mustafa show on grief and comedy. Such contradiction - I wept the entire time but each tear for a different reason.
