Rare horological history up for grabs. As a Cartier and Omega collector, this Omega Marine CK679 in a 14K gold case, retailed by Cartier, is my absolute favourite of all. It is currently available at the Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction.

Head over to my page to read the full carousel post for a complete breakdown of the Omega Marine’s history and details.

One is extremely rare, with around 12 known to exist. The other is practically impossible to find, with only about 6 ever made.

Having two 1970s Cartier London Grails, the Maxi Pebble from circa 1972-73 and the Midi Pebble from circa 1973-74, side by side is something watch collectors dream about. Both of these pieces are heading to Sotheby’s Important Watches auction this month, and the global watch community is waiting for the hammer drop.

If you look closely at the carousel, the dials tell two completely different stories:

The Maxi features the classic inner minute track framing the rotated square layout.

The Midi completely strips away that minute track, stretching the hand-painted Roman numerals toward the center to create a seamless circular motif inside its smaller footprint.

Finding either reference with its original 1970s hand-crafted London deployant buckle intact is next to impossible, let alone seeing both together.

Special thanks to Carl @pine_watch from @sothebyswatches for walking me through these two exceptional watches and sharing the history behind them so I could break it down for you here.

Which dial layout do you prefer, the Maxi or the Midi? Let me know in the comments.
