Research makes my work what it is, and above you can flip through 13 things that’ve crossed my desk, mind, and eyes since June. OK, it’s a bit of a stretch—some of it just happened in the room next to my studio (ie. an @ursaminorstudio photo shoot).

Also in the mix: arctic horror stories, a joy ride in Swift Current circa 1900, a protest against the Vietnam War, some magic cooking, etc. Enjoy.

We got-r-done. My wildly talented niece, Chantal Alejandra, created this camo Alberta-shaped cake for the launch of Jason Purcell’s Passing Through which is up until July 25 at @latitude_53

I’ve known @jasonvpurcell mostly as a poet/stunning person but was blown away to see the visuals for their music project, Venus. The video and song captured a tenderness between men that often only exists in shadows and secrets, at least for millennials growing up on the prairies. Venus features artist Kyle Terrence as the Alberta Boy figure that holds varied emotions for girls, gays and thems. This work is part of a conversation with a project that Kyle created called ‘Berta Boys’ (watch it at latitude53.org)

We still talk about you, Berta Boys, even after 7 years of debuting at Latitude. The film examined Alberta masculinity in a way many of us hadn’t seen at the time. It was familiar with big truck balls and all, but I hadn’t heard it be named, let alone critiqued on the effects it had on the boys around me. For Jason and Kyle, the culture we grew up with proved to be oppressive in distinct ways while artists like Salem Smith @oldbabyoldbaby have literally flipped and reversed the visuals, and exposed it all for the queerness that’s always been there as seen in themes in his visual art and curated events (BRING BACK HOEDOWN)

My own feelings as a masc, wanting to embody the confident skater boys and athletes my friends lusted after, is part of why Venus and Passing Through resonates with me too. And I think it will with many. Come see.
