Ruth Mahaney remembers the White Night Riots in San Francisco. On May 21, 1979, queer people responded en masse to lenient sentencing for Dan White, the cop-turned-politician who assassinated gay politician Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone inside SF’s City Hall. Meanwhile, police rioted at the Castro bar the Elephant Walk. Earlier, a bachelors party full of off-duty vice squad deputies attacked the lesbian bar Peg’s Place on Geary Street in the Richmond. 🔥🚓🔥🚓🔥🚓🔥🚓🔥🚓🔥 No Apologies: Remembering the White Night Riots 6PM Wednesday, June 24 Et al. Books 2831A Mission St, San Francisco The murder of Harvey Milk and George Moscone, and the infamous lenient sentencing of Dan White in 1979 spurred one of the largest riots in San Francisco history. The enduring image of the White Night Riots is a burning SFPD cruiser, immortalized on a Dead Kennedys album cover and in Dan Mavrides’ stylized “NO APOLOGIES” poster, created to raise money for the legal defense of those arrested. But beyond these vivid icons, this landmark in the legacy of San Francisco queer struggle still isn’t well understood. Radicals, liberals, cops, dykes, leathermen, street kids, sex workers, homophiles and anarchists all fought it out on the streets around City Hall, before spreading across the city. By the next morning, a new San Francisco was born.  Join us for a conversation on memories and lessons from the riot with a panel of veteran organizers and journalists, presented by Pinko Magazine and Left in the Bay. This event is also co-presented by, and will be recorded as a podcast for Sad Francisco.

On Saturday June 27 in Montreal, I will be moderating a publishing roundtable on the financial, political, and structural conditions shaping independent art publishing today. The panel features Dr. Kemi Adeyemi (Director, The Black Embodiments Studio), Sky Goodden (Publisher, Momus), and Molly Kleiman (Director, Triple Canopy). The event concludes To Build and Sustain, a two-day convening organized by Momus, with publishers and editors from a few dozen publications across Canada and the US, including mags where I’ve published e.g @cmagazineart and @thewhitneyreview. I will be doing my best to represent @pinkomagazine—less art publication and more political provocation but maybe don’t tell our beloved designers I said that—where I have been an editor for many years. From navigating shrinking resources to resisting censorship and rethinking audiences, this conversation will provide a window into the histories, questions, urgencies, and solidarities emerging and persisting across the field. J’espère vous voir Montréal, beau temps, mauvais temps 🖤 June 27, 2026 7:00 PM–9:00 PM PHI 407 Saint-Pierre Street, Montreal, Canada
