Step 1, find the best quality Calcutta bamboo, like this new batch!

Every build starts with a raw stalk of "Iron Cane" Calcutta bamboo—legendary for its ultra-thick walls and structural strength.

Out of these 100 pieces, between 30-40% will be rejected. I am hand-selecting only the straightest, densest stalks to match specific gaff lengths and hook sizes.

Think of it like your fishing rods line rating and power. Big 4in hooks, get the most dense and thicker pieces of bamboo vs. smaller 2in hooks are paired with a thinner diameter more lightweight piece of bamboo.

One of my first gaffs from August 2011--the evolution of Morita Gaffs.

Although I'm not the first guy to make a Calcutta gaff, I was able to build a legacy of custom Calcutta Bamboo gaffs, bait nets, and fishing equipment that has stood the test for 15 years.

I never started building gaffs with any intent to be a gaff builder and craftsman. It was out of need, since my store bought bamboo gaff broke after many years of use. I created my signature wrap that covers the hooks end, which coined the "Morita Collar", to give my gaff a different look.

I made one for my friend as a boat gift, posted 1 gaff for sale on @bdoutdoorsdotcom , and this is where people started to notice and buy my original gaffs. Fast forward 15 years later, and here I am today. 15th birthday for Morita Custom Gaffs

Great win in the @cascobaybluefinbonanza! We landed a 878.5# bluefin on a random day our charter cancelled due to sickness. Dylan has been fishing with us on our charters all summer and we were able to bring his gf with us + I talked Tyler’s gf into playing hookie! It worked out so well! Tyler had his buddy Kyle join in on the fun as well and we all made it happen! We are still booking charters for Aug + Sept! 🐟
