Thanks @architecture_au for featuring this extract from my book Pettit + Sevitt The Modernist Project. It was a pleasure to spend time with the owners of Loftus House.

If it were not for Sun Line Homes and founder/former diplomat David Jamieson in 1958, Ron Sevitt would never have started Pettit & Sevitt with Brian Pettit in 1961. And the project home industry might not have have begun to offer architect-designed houses in volume. Sun Line was the first new style of “merchant builder” that developed architect-designed houses for production and publicly named the architect. The 1930s subdivider A.V Jennings employed Edward Gurney and the short-lived 1950s Contemporary Homes sold 59 Robin Boyd houses but didn’t specifically promote the architect Robin Boyd or name the firm Grounds Romberg & Boyd.

This Sun-Line house, the Custom 9 model, is for sale in Glenbrook NSW. A veritable time capsule, it shows the work of architect Geoffrey Lumsdaine and a clear 1950s aesthetic enabled by new Stegbar Windowalls developed by Robin Boyd, painted infill panels, brick veneer, open plan living, a well equipped kitchen, orientation to the garden and lots of sunlight … all within a modest footprint.

In its short time, Sun-Line caught the attention of planners when it managed to change Australian ceiling height minimums and so impressed was Dick Dusseldorp that he almost bought the company. Instead he decided to start Lend Lease Homes. Just before Sun-Line grew too fast and went broke, Jamieson approached Michael Dysart and Ken Woolley to design new models, but they were never built. Enter Pettit & Sevitt…

Well it’s been quite the week. Thanks to the horrendous oil prices and delivery fees, we have precious airlifted advance copies of Pettit + Sevitt The Modernist Project for the essential coming weeks. We’re looking forward to our main stock coming from our Japanese printer in November. Book talk at @robin.boyd.foundation on November 13 is selling out soon - so get your seat. Pre-orders for the book are open at @piper.press !

Spring cleaning a mid century split level is a thing, and so is a telescopic cobweb cleaner - highly recommend. Birthdays and lunches, all in one weekend.

Time for chocolate and a cup of tea.

Pettit + Sevitt changed the way Australians thought about the project home.

Their approach brought together architect-led design, adaptable plans, thoughtful responses to site and a strong connection to landscape — ideas that still feel relevant more than 60 years later.

Having renovated several Pettit + Sevitt homes ourselves, we became interested in the story behind them — the ideas that shaped their homes, and why they continue to inspire us today.

✨Pettit + Sevitt The Modernist Project traces the impact of 1950s housing shortages on Australia’s suburban expansion as Ron Sevitt and Brian Pettit set their sights on making architect-designed houses for the middle classes not only affordable, but the best of their type.

While writing this book I’ve been asked many times who really designed the iconic Lowline House? The book outlines the important precedents and influences that created one of Australia’s best architectural collaborations and most successful project house designs. #architecture #modernism #australianarchitecture #midcenturymodern #houses

It was a friendly word of advice thrown Ron Sevitt's way in 1962, right after the Carlingford Homes Fair. As Pettit & Sevitt set out to build new architect-designed project houses in Sydney's northern suburbs, the story of how the Woolley & Dysart designed Flat-Roof House went from something destined to fail to their most successful Lowline model, is one of the chapters in the new book on Pettit & Sevitt. In this photograph, the iconic Eames lounge chair with ottoman made an appearance in the 1966 Lowline B. It was purchased by Ron Sevitt in 1965, from Charles & Ray Eames at 901 W. Washington Boulevard Venice, California - The Eames Office. Today it remains in the Sevitt family home in Ron & Val Sevitt's study and their use of high-design, innovative European and American furniture distinguished their houses and influenced a generation of design-loving homebuyers.

🏠Not just any house. When Pettit & Sevitt began, they were building architect-designed houses in 8 weeks. The first prototype was the Split Level. But how did they do it? And what made the conditions ripe for their eventual production houses, which on average, began within 3 weeks of receiving the customer’s deposit and holding a meeting with the architects — Ken Woolley and Michael Dysart.

Last Thursday in Melbourne and last night in Sydney, I had the distinct honor of celebrating the life and work of two of Australia’s most generous, respected, and legendary architects, @nation.bob and @stephen.varady . These events were made possible with the generous support of @brickworksbp

The original DoubleTalk series, which began in October 2015, ran for four years until 2019. Hosted by Bob and Stephen, the series saw an incredible 58 talks across six cities, featuring 116 architects and speakers.

Now, with my co-host Hannah Tribe @tribestudio_ we decided to switch things up! We put the legends themselves, Bob and Stephen, on stage for these special nights, which we aptly named DoubleTalk Reversed.

It was a fun and truly memorable experience. A huge thank you once again to Bob and Stephen for their fantastic and inspiring talks!
