We’re grateful to everyone who joined Eden’s Farm for “From Awareness to Accountability: A Symposium on Human Trafficking.” It was a meaningful day of learning, conversation, and connection around how we can better support survivors and strengthen our community’s response to human trafficking.

A heartfelt thank-you to the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work and Dean Dr. Kyaien O. Conner for being such gracious hosts and welcoming this important conversation into your space.

Thank you to Summer Carroll and Jim Hindinger from the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General for sharing your expertise in human trafficking investigations and prosecution, and to Dr. Rachel Seamans for helping us deepen our understanding of trauma and its impact on survivors.

To our panelists, staff, and everyone who attended—thank you for bringing your experience, thoughtful questions, and willingness to learn from one another. Moving from awareness to accountability takes all of us, with survivors’ voices, choices, and needs at the center of our work. 💛

"We need to move away from individual programs and interventions and become more holistic around the family and community. How do we support Black families and Black communities during pregnancy and postpartum?
—Dr. Serwaa S. Omowale, PhD, LMSW, MPH

Maternal mental health cannot be treated as an individual responsibility.

A mother does not experience pregnancy, birth, loss, postpartum recovery, or a mental health crisis in isolation. Her well-being is connected to her family, relationships, living conditions, workplace, healthcare providers, and community.

We cannot hand someone a brochure, provide one screening, make one referral, and call that a system of care.

Holistic support means:

Listening to the entire family.
Educating partners and support people.
Connecting screening directly to treatment.
Providing culturally responsive care.
Addressing rest, food, housing, transportation, childcare, and financial stability.
Supporting families before pregnancy, throughout postpartum, and beyond the six-week visit.

Black families do not need more disconnected programs that require them to navigate every barrier alone. They need coordinated systems rooted in trust, culture, dignity, and community wisdom.

The question is not simply, “How do we treat one mother?

The question is: How do we build families, communities, and systems prepared to support her before, during, and after a crisis?

Maternal mental health is family health.
Maternal mental health is community health.
And community-centered care must be part of the solution.

🚨Calling Local Artists and Emerging Curators!!!

I had the honor of serving as the first lead curator for Envisioning a Just Pittsburgh in 2024 & 2025. (Also, fun fact: the flyer that you’ve probably seen around town is my artwork!). Now in its 4th year, EJP is seeking a paid fellow who can shepherd the curation of the show and subsequent programming.

The Fellow will work across partner organizations, including Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, August Wilson African American Cultural Center, and 1Hood Media, to steer the Envisioning a Just Pittsburgh showcase which will be held at the Carnegie Museum of Art in February 2027. The showcase will feature approximately fifty works selected by the jurors and the Fellow.

Applications are due August 30th. The link is in my bio for easy access!

We are ready to announce that @lauraposkin will be leaving her position as Executive Director of Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh effective Friday, July 24, to become Chief Aging Officer with Jewish Healthcare Foundation (@jhforg). Laura has been a stellar leader for Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh over the past ten years, and we are incredibly grateful for her extraordinary commitment, vision and energy which has touched the lives of so many older residents of our region and positioned AFGP as a national leader.

Laura has built an exceptional, high-performing team, which has effectively executed and successfully achieved the goals and objectives of our latest five-year Action Plan. We are so grateful to them and all our partners for such world-class achievement.

We are also very fortunate to have Cassandra Masters as our Associate Director, who has led several of our major projects, including the impactful Age Inclusion Campaign. We are especially pleased that Cassandra has agreed to serve as our Interim Executive Director over the coming months. Please feel free to reach out to her (cassandra@agefriendlypgh.org) during this time.

A Search Committee has been assembled to map out a process to identify qualified Executive Director candidates and make a recommendation to AFGP’s supporting partners, SWPPA and Pitt School of Social Work (@pittsocialwork), regarding a permanent selection.

Thank you for all you do to create livable communities and make our region more inclusive and respectful of all ages!

🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏾‍♂️ JOIN US ON AUGUST 15!This will be my 10th race raising vital funds for brain aneurysm research. 🧠❤️

Ten years ago, I survived a stroke and brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm.

I am the fourth generation on my mother’s side to suffer a brain hemorrhage—and the only survivor.

I’m returning to Pittsburgh, the city where my grandfather, J. Edward Trower, suffered the “worst headache of life” from a hemorrhage that took his life just four months before I was born.

This race is for all of the lives lost, and those we intend to help save. 🙏🏾

Race Details:
🗓️ Saturday, August 15 at 8:00-11:00 AM
📍 North Shore Riverfront Park👟 Brain Aneurysm Foundation’s Pittsburgh Run/Walk

How to Support: Join my family (TEAM EPPERSON/FARLEY) to walk, run, participate virtually or make a donation.
