Inspired by the tension between high and low resolution, Ghost Collection by Alberto Essesi brings two contrasting worlds together. Seamless forms carved from solid aluminum transition into pixelated structures crafted from solid wood, blurring the boundary between the digital and the physical.

Some furniture begins with a sketch. @pixel___theory began with a pixel.

Created by New York-based spatial designer Ceren Arslan, the collection takes one of the simplest units of the digital world and gives it physical form.

Cubes of 5, 10 and 20 cm become the building blocks. Repeated, stacked and rearranged, they turn into sofas, benches, armchairs and lighting. The result feels almost deceptively simple: furniture that looks pixelated, but behaves like a flexible design system.

What makes Pixel Theory particularly interesting to us is that its identity doesn’t come from one fixed silhouette. Change the composition, scale or colour and the same design language becomes something entirely different.

There’s something wonderfully current about that idea.

A sofa not designed as one object, but as a system of possibilities.

MEET THE MAKER — CEREN ARSLAN

Some designers make furniture. Others make spaces. Ceren Arslan seems more interested in what happens when you stop separating the two.

From the pixelated geometry of Pixel Theory to immersive environments like The Chess Olympics, Studded Chapel, The Pool Tub and A Cold Vault Room, her work moves freely between architecture, furniture and art.

Repetition becomes form. Colour becomes atmosphere. Geometry becomes experience.

With a background spanning SHoP Architects, KPF and Kelly Wearstler, the New York–based spatial designer brings an architectural way of thinking to everything she creates — even when the result is a chair.

A maker we think deserves to be on your radar.

What if furniture worked less like a finished object and more like a system you could build with?

This pixel-based concept starts with a simple modular grid and lets the form emerge from there. The same visual language moves from sofas to pendants, table lamps and floor lights, changing scale and function without losing its identity.

What interests us is the shift in thinking. Instead of designing one object and asking where it belongs, the system begins with the space, its dimensions and what it needs to do. The furniture becomes configurable rather than fixed.

There is something almost digital about it: pixels translated into physical form, softened through velvet, stained wood and saturated colour.

Perhaps this is where modular design becomes most interesting. Not when it gives us more configurations of the same product, but when one idea can become entirely different products.

Back in June I was invited by @haworthinc and @sixtysixmag to be part of Design Lab at Neocon in Chicago, which incidentally is where I was born and spent part of my childhood.

It was a great experience, made even better by my fellow designers and the organizers/curators, including @chrissforce and @patricia_urquiola

Seeing an exhibition of avant-garde work at Neocon would have been a treat in itself, but to be a part of such a thing was a dream. Thank you-

*Also thanks @chrissforce for use of some of your photos!

High resolution meets low resolution in this striking furniture collection.
-
Designers merge the fluid, seamless curves of carved aluminum with the deliberate pixelation of solid wood, creating forms that feel both analog and digital. The Ghost Collection, developed in collaboration with @exit__ceren, plays with how we perceive materiality and finish. Smooth metal meets blocky wooden geometry, clearly marking where one material ends and another begins but still making it work with a minecraft-esque vibes.
