I’ve come to love building heirloom high end furniture pieces for a family home or buisness. But occasionally, a brief comes along that lets me step into a completely different world. This was one of those projects.

@ravenwoodmeadery Ravenwood Meadery at Lowe Mill & Arts Center in Huntsville, Alabama, reached out with a unique request: They needed a realistic, old style cage for their upcoming Vampire Ball. The catch? It needed to be affordable, collapsible (to fit under a stage), and delivered in a two week deadline.

A heavy iron cage is expensive, heavy, and impossible to move. I needed to create an illusion. I drew on the traditional jail framing style of the Old West; stout wooden uprights and crossmembers, but adapted for theatre.

I built the frame from stained Spruce. To ensure the dancers could grab the cross members and use them for visual impact, I cut crosslap joints, gluing them up for a seamless, strong finish.

The uprights are secured with screws, meaning the entire 4ft x 4ft x 6.5ft structure can be disassembled and stored flat in minutes.

Then came the next challenge: the bars. Real iron was out of the question. Too heavy too expensive. Instead, I used 1/2" PVC pipes. I sanded them, primed them, and painted them with a black and silver hammered metal effect paint. Under stage lights, they don't look like PVC. They look like forged iron.

The result? A piece that holds the dark, moody atmosphere of a Vampire Ball, but behind the scenes, it's a collapsible puzzle of wood and PVC.

The client was over the moon, and seeing the dancers perform inside it, with the neon red lighting reflecting off the "hammered metal," made the days in the workshop worth it.

Special thanks to the photographer of the event @pixelsoftheimagination and his excellent photography skills. The pictures that night came out great and I was thrilled of the photos he got of the prop in full use.

THE RUCKUS BROUGHT TO BIRMINGHAM 🐝🔥👐
When the legends hit the stage, time rolls right back to the golden era of hip-hop. This live performance in Birmingham is pure energy, flawless style, and undeniable proof that Shaolin never loses its footing.
Every single frame in this carousel is soaked in authentic underground atmosphere: signature gestures, heavy bounce, and an energy that tears the walls down. Living history being written right before our eyes. Wu-Tang Forever. 👐🟡⚫️ #wutang #statenisland #shaolin #rap #mc @wutangclan @pixelsoftheimagination
