What do you do when your safe space is no longer your safe space? After the dog passed in June I couldn't be home in Ptown; it was just too hard. I knew that for a long time, because I knew his end was near for a long time, and that it would be impossible for me to be there. It was just him and me for so many years, in that place. New York was a bit less hard with its absence of routine but every time I climbed the stairs to my door I saw him learning to climb up them alongside me in 2020.

Fire Island became my most regular safe space, alongside a lot of irregular bouncing around the world. That Fire Island should become that for me isn't something I ever expected - I turned down invitations for years because I was afraid of it and how self-conscious I'd feel (and then spent the first few summers there aggressively battling those feelings). It's a place with a lot of pressure.

But somewhere along the line the unfamiliar became familiar. People recognized me and I recognized them. I got better at dealing with the unfriendly parts: less "oh god they don't want me here" and more "who the fuck even are you?" or perhaps a kinder, knowing recognition that everyone's on their own journey, I don't know what they're going through, and ultimately if they even have an opinion about me, it absolutely doesn't matter.

And being in a place with so much natural beauty, with lots of options for whatever mood I found myself in, living under a shared roof with old friends and new ones who looked out for me when I was down, was a safe space.

Saying goodbye today on an appropriately gray and rainy afternoon was a lot more emotional than I expected but it makes sense. It was the place - and the people - who held me up this summer. Very grateful for that. And looking forward to being back soon. 🫂❤️

Some of my oldest friends, newest family members.
Love that spans decades.

This is a bit of a plug for my book but love is so much bigger than one monogamous relationship. No matter your relationship status or structure, remember to celebrate all the love in your life, in all its forms 💙

forever a pink pony girl ♡
.
ive never posted the photos, but a year ago today i got to open for @chappellroan ! i had opened for her back in 2022 when i was still just starting drag so it felt very full circle to me and i am so grateful for that opportunity :)

i’ll never forget hearing pink pony club live for the first time back in 2022 at the bowery ballroom and just sobbing at how much I could relate to the lyrics. that song really is the story of my life and her music means so much to me 🥺
