In the second article of the Education and Palestine special issue, “‘Education Without National Consciousness is Not Education’: Palestinian Teachers’ Quiet Revolution Against the Ongoing Nakba,” Thea Renda Abu El-Haj, Jo Kelcey, and Maria Abunnasr center Palestinian teachers as political actors in the long struggle for self-determination. Drawing on oral histories with Palestinian educators working in UNRWA schools in Lebanon, the article shows how education operates both as a site of governance and as a terrain of resistance across generations shaped by displacement, war, and exile. The authors build on Rabea Eghbariah’s concept of the Nakba as an ongoing process marked by displacement, fragmentation, and the denial of self-determination by extending it into the diasporic context. Education becomes a key space where these dynamics unfold beyond historic Palestine. Within this landscape, curriculum emerges as one of many battlegrounds. Host states and international agencies have at times mobilized schooling to manage and contain Palestinian political aspirations, while Palestinian educators work to sustain historical consciousness and collective belonging. One of the article’s central contributions is its focus on pedagogy as resistance. The teachers featured are described as quiet revolutionaries who, through everyday acts of care, teaching, and community building, sustain connections to homeland and national identity even amid displacement. Their work shows how education can refuse the fragmentation that settler colonialism seeks to impose. By situating these practices within a longer historical arc that extends to the current assault on Gaza’s educational system, the article reminds us that attacks on schooling are not simply wartime damage, but part of a sustained effort to undermine Palestinian existence itself.
