Architects and designers are creative beings who can easily find inspiration at any moment. A napkin sketch is an elemental expression of thought. Napkin sketches have been a go-to companion for those who find spur of the moment inspiration allowing for the exploration of thoughts and ideas with their hands.
You can express primal feelings, a memory, even a philosophy. It’s a telling exercise about how people think, what is important to them, and the spirit of their thoughts. These little pieces of paper displaying ideas can eventually be turned into greater works of art.

Here are some of the napkin sketches from Bjarke Ingels, Wolf Prix, Thom Mayne, Robert Venturi, Zaha Hadid and others.

“Representational ACTS,” a series of discussions sponsored by ARCH 572 (Architecture Criticism TheorieS). As a topic, the obscure ubiquity of representation and architecture has come to define the scholarly debate, a tendency which has clear manifestations here at Taubman College, where generations of students and faculty have dealt with the same questions by alternating means (as drawings, as fabrications, as histories, as post-digital and virtual realities). Elaborations on these tendencies are open to the public and begin at 1:00 pm in the Auditorium (2104 A&AB). 3/11/20 - Perry Kulper; 3/18/20 - T+E+A+M (Thom Moran, Ellie Abrons, and Meredith Miller)⁣; 3/25/20 - EXTENTS.US (McLain Clutter, Cyrus Peñarroyo); 4/1/20 - 2019-20 Taubman Fellows (Jacob Comerci, Matiss Groskaufmanis, and Eduardo Mediero); 4/8/20 - Stock-a-Studio (Laida Aguirre). Not typically one for selfies but the opportunity to catch up with @pkulper again required some form of record. pk has been an incredible inspiration in my life and practice for almost 20 years now. While I struggle to apply all I have learned from his tutelage through the rigors of daily practice, I still aspire to process, consider, and conduct Case Design in a way that is true to those ideals and principles. Much still to learn and more to be done but as you can see in the photo, we’re all still young ; )
