This Thursday! 5/28 at the @ironhorsenoho . 𝙎𝑨𝙃𝑨 𝑮𝙉𝑨𝙒𝑨 unites the founders of Innov Gnawa with leading figures from New York City’s jazz and contemporary music scenes to reimagine modern Gnawa music. Gnawa is a centuries-old Moroccan spiritual and musical tradition with roots in sub-Saharan Africa. It’s simultaneously a healing practice, a religious ceremony, and a musical form — those three things are inseparable in its original context. Its cross-pollination with electronic dance music and jazz is, well, a f*cking vibe. ✨ Maalem Hassan Ben Jaafer — Innov Gnawa
✨ Daniel Freedman — David Byrne, Angelique Kidjo
✨ Amino Belyamani — Innov Gnawa, Dawn of Midi
✨ David Lizmi — Innov Gnawa, Bombino
✨ Jason Lindner — David Bowie, Now vs Now
✨ Guilherme Monteiro — Gal Costa, Forro in the Dark This brand new supergroup is just starting to tour, following an incredible debut this Spring at Big Ears and a first LP that is really worth tuning in to featuring Nels Cline, Gilad Hekselman, and Donny McCaslin. Selector Tomas of @planetary_hifi on the 1s and 2s. 𝙄𝒇 𝒚𝙤𝒖 𝒍𝙞𝒌𝙚: Tinariwen, Bombino, trad-mod experiments, Pharaoh Sanders, Floating Points

Secret Planet Presents: DOGO DU TOGO ✨🇹🇬 This Saturday, October 25th
Dogo du Togo & The Alagaa Beat Band is a collective of top Togolese musicians led by Massama Dogo, aka Dogo du Togo, who are putting Togolese music on the map by blending psychedelic rock and afrobeat into a genre-defying sound Dogo calls the “Alagaa Beat.” Combining iconic rhythms of the Ewe, Mina, Ga, and Kabye  people, alagaa blossoms from a complex interplay between the drum kit and rhythm guitar, with a distinctive double snare hit and a guitar part based on the traditional gankogui bell pattern. The Alagaa beat (Alagaa means trance in Ewe) and Dogo’s melodies are anchored in Togo’s rich cultural history, based on traditional rhythms and unique pentatonic scales known as Mina or Mami, derived from the music of the local Vodún religion and traditions that permeate everyday life in Togo. Selector Tomás (of @planetaryhifi ) on the 1s and 2s with a groove-heavy global musical experience for you. And a very special @ich.bin.ein.sabich Iraqi-jewish sandwich pop-up will be pumping out hot veggie pitas all night from the kitchen. BAR & FOOD POP-UP at 5PM GENERAL DOORS + DJ 6PM TICKETS $20 ADV / $25 DOOR ALL AGES Ticket link in bio! Dogo du Togo artwork by Tory Newmyer.

Beat-driven African psych rock at the Horse! Secret Planet presents @dogodutogo on Saturday, October 25. After two decades of living in the US and fronting the successful Afro-pop band Elikeh, bandleader Massama Dogo yearned to release music inspired by his home country of Togo. Now splitting his time between Washington, DC and Togo’s capital Lomé, he set out to create a brand new sound that put his roots and culture on the musical map: the alagaa beat. Combining iconic rhythms of the Ewe, Mina, Ga, and Kabye  people, such as kamou, kpanlogo, kinka and bobobo, alagaa blossoms from a complex interplay between the drum kit and rhythm guitar, with a distinctive double snare hit and a guitar part based on the traditional gankogui bell pattern. Alagaa means ‘trance’ in Ewe, “because when you listen to this music,” says Dogo, “if you don’t get in a trance, then something’s wrong with you! The alagaa beat brings the energy right away. As soon as you bring it in, it just feels different, it takes you somewhere else.” The melodies, too, are anchored in Togo’s cultural history, using unique pentatonic scales known as mina or mami, derived from the music of the local Vodún religion and traditions that permeate everyday life in Togo. Tickets $20 ADV / $25 DOOR. All Ages. Mostly standing room for dancing. Link in bio!

Season Two is a wrap ✅✅✅ THANK YOU. It felt proper to close out our second season with another sold out show at the Iron Horse — and SUCH a joyful one with Ghanaian Afrofunk legend Gyedu-Blay Ambolley and his Sekondi Band, as well as Maison Électronique and Selector Tomás in the DJ booth. The band had an incredible time, and they were quick to share that their music doesn’t reach that level unless there’s an audience capable of reciprocating the energy. ✨ Thanks to Jesse Asare ( @sare6ixx ) for these captures. Shout outs to @spaceagencybooking , @jazzisdead , and @eatdailyop for setting this one up.
We hope to see you soon at one of our summer dance parties w/ @morelove.intl: 7.12 @morelove.intl w/ @riobambaaa and @deejaytheory 8.10 @morelove.intl day rave w/ @undergroundsystem , @captain.planet.music , and @deejaytheory ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 S3 kicks off AUGUST 21 at @thedrakeamherst with @romperayo and @shakipresents .

What an honor to see Ghanaian highlife legend @gyedublay_official at @ironhorsenoho last night for an absolute dynamite, sold out show!! 👑🎶🔥 @planetary_hifi on the ones and twos blowing my mind with the grooviest afrobeat and opening set by @maison_elec! And even @afropopworldwide was there representing! THANK YOU! @secretplanetnoho @jazzisdead @alishaheed @adrianyounge @thumpcapsule @eatdailyop Very special!!~~ On the drive out, I serendipitously tuned in to an awesome interview with Ambolley on Fabulous 413 (@kaliisisontheair @montebelmonte) on @nepublicmedia, a perfect way to get pumped for the show! First stop was to get fueled up for three hours of dancing at the one and only @eatdailyop, always serving up a transcendent meal, the best in the valley. “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Ain’t that the truth. Amen, hallelujah. 🙏🏼💖

Hype is real for this Wednesday ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 The legendary @gyedublay_official is here from Ghana 🇬🇭 and playing Northampton, MA to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic album “Simigwa”, produced with Ebo Taylor in 1975 and forever since in every DJ’s record bag. It’s his first legit tour in the US and he’s going to play the album in its entirety with his eight-piece band. The album’s unique style, inspired by the explosive fuck and horns of the J.B.s, combined traditional highlife music with funk and soul, tracing the outlines of what an African James Brown might sound like. This very special tour is made possible by @jazzisdead , the music label and tour series founded by @alishaheed and @adrianyounge . Secret Planet closes out Season 2 with this banger in collaboration with the @ironhorsenoho and daily operation’s @thumpcapsule . Tickets moving fast! 🏃🏾‍➡️ Link in bio.

Deliriously fun times last Saturday with our sizzly bill of @loboko_music x @lollise, with @planetary_hifi on the 1s and 2s between sets. The dancing got reckless in a very good way and the bands slayed under the Marigold’s beautiful tin ceiling. Easthampton, we could do this with you *more* *often* . Swipe all the way through for the best dance shots 🙃 Thanks to everyone who came out for this one; to the Marigold for hosting us again, and to all of the musicians 🙏✨ Seeya this Saturday in Amherst for @frentecumbiero and @mica.far 🔥🔥🔥 📷: @dsp_413_photo 🙏

Friends, are you ready for the next party?!? Next Saturday, MAY 10, we are packing in the @marigoldtheater in Easthampton with some serious rump-shake with a double header for you. LOLLISE X LOBOKO: NYC-based Congolese guitar dance band @loboko_music and the tremendous Motswana artist @lollise , all intertwined with deep and funky cuts cuts from the African continent courtesy of Selector Tomás of @planetaryhifi . Loboko is the infectious Brooklyn dance band anchored by Congolese guitar virtuoso and vocalist Yohni Loboko. Afro-futurist artist Lollise creates a kinetic fusion of Kalanga folk, soukous, and afrobeat with art-pop and electronic bubblegum. We love Easthampton. Vibes are just the best. Ticket link in bio — see you there ✨
