THE SERVICEBERRY ROAD TRIP | Relearning Ecological Relationship

What kinds of knowledge are disappearing alongside industrial agriculture?

In Denmark, shepherdess Berit Kiilerich and organic farmer Lærke Lyhne (@lyhnet) are preserving forms of ecological care rooted in reciprocity, biodiversity, and community learning.

Organised by NOAH (the Danish branch of Friends of the Earth International), the ‘Serviceberry Road Trip’ brought together farmers, activists, and newcomers to explore nature-based responses to the climate crisis through food, farming, and collective experience.

The project asks a wider question: what happens when sustainability becomes disconnected from land, ancestral knowledge, and human relationship with the living world?

Letter to an Artist interview with @jessicajlee originally published for @planted_journal in 2025.

Jessica J. Lee is an environmental historian whose writing delves into the historical and social contexts behind environmental landscapes and how these influence our personal interactions with nature.

"Weeds force us into seeing that passage of time - the stopped clock. Do we let a landscape continue unchecked or do we manage it? Do we allow succession or carefully cultivate a place to maximise biodiversity? Conservation, sure, but of what, when?"

El Batin Bustan | The Belly Is a Garden

Food waste is not just a mistake — it's a disconnect. In many cultures, food is revered as a gift, an act of care, and a reflection of abundance. The Arabic proverb el batin bustan — 'the belly is a garden' — reminds us that nourishment is a living, breathing relationship between what we consume and the land that feeds us.

From tending plants in the soil to preserving food through fermentation, pickling, and drying, every act of care reconnects us to the cycle of life. Abundance is not about excess — it's about respect for what is grown, from seed to soil to farmworker to plate.

🌱 The Food Empowerment Project (@foodempowermentproject) works to advance food justice and reduce food insecurity in communities across the United States.

🫘 The Palestine Heirloom Seed Library preserves traditional Palestinian seeds and promotes food sovereignty through heritage crops and culinary practices.

‘The quotidian nature of sharing that was always in Palestine — of bread snacks, teas, coffees, and meals with strangers. We never ask you who you are but we insist on feeding you. These acts are not charity, this is the way of life.’ — Vivien Sansour, Founder of the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library (@vivien.sansour)

High-altitude art? Yes please.

Set 3,600m above sea level in the dramatic landscapes of Ladakh, Into the Pink is a performance installation by artists @doyeljoshi and @neilghosebalser, presented as part of @sabiennale, the highest contemporary land art exhibition in Asia.

Created with 50 students from Mahabodhi Residential School during a three-day workshop of trust games, learning and cultural exchange, the piece unfolded in a wave of bright pink costumes that both echoed traditional Ladakhi dress and popped against the stark mountain backdrop.

A surprise game of musical chairs added a layer of stillness and absence, inviting questions around displacement, presence and how we move through an ever-changing climate.

Repost from @planted_journal • Art Empowering Minds at 3,600m

“Into the Pink” is a performance installation by artists @doyeljoshi and @neilghosebalser, presented as part of @sabiennale—the highest contemporary land art exhibition in Asia—set at 3,600m in Ladakh, India. The work explores the relationship between land and its people, with a focus on climate positivity, culture, and community.

Co-created with 50 students from Mahabodhi Residential School, the performance evolved from a three-day workshop centered on trust-building, learning, and cultural exchange through play. Dressed in vivid pink costumes—both contrasting with the landscape and echoing traditional Ladakhi jackets—students and artists brought the piece to life.

A climactic game of musical chairs introduced moments of sudden absence and stillness, symbolizing displacement—of people and nature—and questioning how we occupy space within shifting environmental contexts.

Through Into the Pink, Neil and Doyel channel the essence of Ladakh’s landscape, shaped over millennia by its culture and people. The work’s power lies in its site-specificity, contrasting human interventions with the raw austerity of the terrain.
