DC on the Eyes • New Logo and Identity for @navyyarddcbid by @planthousestudio — 🧑‍💼 ABOUT THE CLIENT (Est. 1799) “Anchored by the Washington Navy Yard, established in 1799 as the nation’s first naval shipbuilding facility, the Navy Yard neighborhood is one of Washington, DC’s oldest industrial corridors. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries, the area served as a working waterfront and industrial center. Today Navy Yard has evolved into a vibrant mixed-use district featuring waterfront parks, residential communities, retail shops, and world class sports venues such as Audi Field and Nationals Park. The Navy Yard BID delivers comprehensive place management services that help ensure the neighborhood is clean, safe, accessible, distinctive, welcoming, and vibrant. Through active collaboration and strategic partnerships, the BID works to cultivate a thriving waterfront community along the banks of the Anacostia River.” • 🦸 FROM PLANTHOUSE STUDIO “The new name was the easy part—it’s what everyone already said. The harder challenge was designing an identity that could carry the energy, diversity, and ambition of the neighborhood. The Navy Yard wordmark is confident and contemporary, built to hold its own on street banners, social feeds, and signage across the district. Our new logo draws on inspiration from archival planning docs, dating back to the 1800s, when the area was still used as a naval base.” • 🧑‍💻 BRAND NEW’S REACTION Overall, this is a very effective identity that is anchored in the 200-year history of the destination and rather than just being weighed down by it, it presents it in an engaging and relaxed attitude that celebrates its modern-day appeal, be it pizza, cocktails, yoga, or a baseball game. — #noted #branding #identity #beforeandafter #destination

@commongroundsgrocer a Farm-to-Table Grocer by @evanfreed4 opens a pop-up in Snacks and Design: curated snacks, drinks, condiments, art, and design at 189 Main Street. We’re here for first times—when local regenerative cheese meets sourdough crackers. When creamy sheep milks yogurt lays eyes on fall crisp apples and crunchy granolas. When single sourced sea salt bumps into potato and garlic. Stop by to see what other firsts you’ll experience…

A week ago today I was in Portland, Maine speaking at AIGA Maine’s Design Fest. In recent years so much of my work has been online, and it was such a treat to be with a group in person (and banana map IRL!). The theme of this year’s AIGA Maine Design Fest was CONNECTIONS, and all I know is we need way more of this in the world! I’ll share more about my talk soon, but first I want to give a massive thank you to Emily Foran (@foran_concepts) and the entire @aigamaine team. What you put together was so impressive and inspiring and I felt lit up interacting with participants and fellow speakers. Thank you Kirk Wallace (@bonehaus) and Adam Danielson (@adam__danielson) for the very human look at balancing connections for teamwork, @jordandeneellis for the friendly reminder that we can share our work more than once (and has me pumped to play with Adobe Express), Ryan Adams (@ryanwritesonthings) and Rachel Gloria Adams (@rachelgloriaia) for showing us the power of murals to engage and bring together community, Rebecca Brooker (@beccabrooker @planthousestudio) for giving a voice to queer design (shout out @queerdesignclub), and Andrew Elijah Edwards (@aelijoide) for insights into the fact that we no longer know what’s real in today’s world and reminder that there are still many questions to ask around AI. I’m particularly grateful to Vince (@pronounceddoobay) went to three supermarkets to get enough bananas for everyone to map on! 🍌 THANK YOU TO EVERYONE BEHIND THE SCENES who helped make this such a special day. ❤️ I truly loved connecting this community. We're excited to share some news with you! Over the past few months, we've been working with the folks at @planthousestudio on an exciting rebrand that aligns deeply with the ByWater Institute's mission and values. The ByWater Institute was founded in 2016 at Tulane University, to integrate research findings, community input, and transdisciplinary scholarship to ensure a better future for the world’s waterways and climate—first in the Mississippi River Basin, with a vision to expand into ecosystems beyond. Our new logo is clean and modern, with typographic references to the water levees and similar infrastructure that plays a critical part of our work. Our new brand color, ByWater Blue, is a distinct and memorable tone of blue that builds on our vision for clean, fresh, and accessible water resources for all. Stay tuned to see the full rebrand rolling out over the next few weeks.
