excited to finally share that the film I’ve been laboring on for many years, with the help of so many people, will be premiering at the @sfjewishfilm festival this summer. Feeling excited, hopeful, (and anxious) about the conversations that can emerge from this film - and I’m finally ready to share it with the world. Thank you to @sfjewishfilm for believing in the film and providing this platform. link in bio for tickets, pls share with all your friends in the Bay Area, and I hope to bring the film soon to a city near you. Write up from the festival below:

In this searing portrait, filmmaker Simon Mendes examines the towering and deeply complicated shadow cast by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, the “Singing Rabbi,” whose music transformed Jewish worship across denominations and became woven into the fabric of the Jewish people. Through the perspective of his daughter, singer Neshama Carlebach—who spent years carrying forward her father’s teachings and music—the film traces a painful reckoning that emerged after numerous women publicly accused Carlebach of sexual abuse following his death in 1994. Haunted by revelations about the man she idolized, Neshama and an entire community are forced to confront the difficult question: what do you do when someone revered as a holy teacher has also caused profound harm? With compassion and complexity, Mendes crafts a thoughtful exploration of faith and accountability, capturing a community and a family still grappling with how to reconcile the comfort and ubiquity of Carlebach’s music with the disturbing allegations surrounding his legacy. —Jesse Knight

At 90 years old, Fred Specktor is the oldest working agent at Hollywood’s top talent agency. He became an agent in 1956, the year “Marty” won best picture. James Dean’s last movie was about to come out. Most actors were under contract, subjects of studio chiefs who decided what parts they played and when.

Since then, he has been orchestrating the careers of longtime clients who include Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons as part of the stable of talent representatives at @creativeartistsagency. He says they don’t need to worry about him retiring.

“I haven’t come close,” he said.

As new business models are turning Hollywood into an industry few veterans recognize, Specktor is simultaneously an emblem of a bygone era and a player in the current one. Read more at the link in bio. (🖋️: @erichschwartzel, 📷️: Plastic Palmtree for WSJ. Magazine; Photos: CAA/Shutterstock)
