INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP WEEK (IWW) 2026
Workshop Teaching
@hgkbasel_industrialdesign

•
Denim as a symbol of empowerment and liberation. Material as a trace of extraction, displacement and memory. Repair as an act of care.

The workshop begins by exploring how materials, techniques and makers respond to one another, and how form and ways of knowing can emerge through this process. What do we know about a material? What histories does it carry? What if we approach materials not simply mediums, but as carriers of knowledge? What are their qualities and limitations? And what might we discover through working with it?

Working with a material is a process of correspondence. As Ingold suggests, we come to know form through making. Form is not fully determined beforehand; rather, it takes shape through our ongoing response to the material and the process.

In the final prototype, woven materials become a record of this encounter, carrying traces of the students’ creative decisions, discoveries, and unexpected directions.
