“Sometimes the most powerful act of courage is knowing when to let go of center stage, make room for other voices, and embrace the freedom of a new chapter. Stepping aside doesn't mean becoming less. It means discovering new ways to shine while celebrating the voices rising around us.” A powerful and timely message from Angry, Raucous, and Shamelessly Gorgeous at PlayMakers Repertory Company at UNC-Chapel Hill. A bold, funny, and moving reminder that every generation deserves to be heard—and that life has more than one great act. On stage October 14–November 1, 2026 Paul Green Theatre, Joan H. In the costume shop at PlayMakers Repertory Company, creativity begins long before the curtain rises. The steady hum of sewing machines, the hiss of steam irons, and the rustle of paper patterns fill a space where students transform research, fabric, and imagination into costumes that tell stories. “Most of what you see on stage can’t be purchased in a store, and everything is custom-made,” says Triffin Morris, costume director at PlayMakers. “So, it’s like haute couture even if it looks like it’s something dirty or messy or old.” Known affectionately as the “Costume Laboratory,” the shop is part classroom, part workshop, and part research space. Before cutting fabric or threading a needle, students dive into historical records, photographs, garment collections, and construction techniques to understand how clothing was made and worn across different eras. That research recently helped bring "Oedipus: King/Colonus" to life, including the creation of custom 3D-printed pins central to a pivotal scene. Students regularly blend traditional craftsmanship with emerging technologies while solving the practical challenges of live theater. For Morris, the experience teaches more than technical skills. “Because research inherently involves making mistakes and following false leads, it teaches students how to learn from failure instead of fearing it,” she says. One stitch, one problem, and one story at a time, students learn how ideas become reality. As part of #UNCResearchWeek, the Costume Laboratory will showcase its work at the Research & Discovery Fair, where students can explore how research extends beyond the sciences and into the arts. 📅 Wednesday, October 21 🕚 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. 📍 FPG Student Union, Great Hall 🎓 CLE credit available Link in the @uncresearch bio to read more. #UNCResearchIsNC Triffin Morris stands between racks of colorful clothing

One of many fabrics for OUR TOWN after a scouring wash. Modern fabrics often have finishing treatments (like wrinkle or odor resistance), even those sold as yardage for sewing projects, . and they affect the hand of the fabric. Often we do a scouring process before the fabric is cut and sewn, especially for costumes that will be laundered frequently throughout the run of a show.

Our @uncchapelhill family was blessed by the life and work, talent and generosity of #evamariesaint whose grace and gifts were as evident in person as on screen. In atto her appearances at @playmakersrep Eva, and her husband #JefferyHayden, supported our @unchollywoodinternship with encouragement and enthusiasm. May we honor her legacy by supporting these vital programs for young talent. Repost from @playmakersrep • We are saddened by the passing of Academy Award winner Eva Marie Saint, whose extraordinary talent graced both the screen and our stage. PlayMakers had the honor of welcoming her for two productions: Death of a Salesman, alongside Judd Hirsch, and Love Letters. We are grateful to count this remarkable artist among the performers who have shaped our history.

Paul Green & The Birth of Outdoor Historical Drama 🎭 ✨If you’ve ever sat under the open sky to watch history come alive on stage, you’ve experienced the revolutionary vision of North Carolina’s own Paul Eliot Green (1894–1981). Considered the father of American outdoor historical drama, Green was a powerhouse of 20th-century theater. A Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright for his groundbreaking play In Abraham’s Bosom, he dedicated his life to giving voice to Southern folklore, social justice, and complex human stories. As a major leader of the renowned Carolina Playmakers (now PlayMakers Repertory Company) in Chapel Hill, Green didn’t just write plays, he deeply shaped the entire Triangle theater ecosystem. His influence rippled through early theatrical traditions, community pageants, and historic performance spaces across Chapel Hill, Durham, and beyond. In 1937, Green transformed American theater once again by writing The Lost Colony on Roanoke Island. Performed at the iconic Waterside Theatre in Manteo, it pioneered a brand-new art form: the “symphonic drama,” weaving music, dance, pageantry, and historical narrative under the stars. What was originally planned for a single summer season in 1937 became a legend. Over eight decades later, The Lost Colony remains the longest-running outdoor symphonic drama in the United States. Paul Green believed theater belonged to the community and should honor the history beneath our feet. Today, his legacy echoes across every stage in North Carolina. 🌌✨ If you love history, and the rich traditions and hidden lore of the stage, join The Ghost Guild Inc. for Aloreing Destinations: Tickets, Please! 🎟 👻 at Fullsteam’s American Tobacco Campus location to explore North Carolina’s most historic and haunted performance venues. This talk augments the Museum of Durham History’s upcoming exhibit, ‘Playhouses and Picture Palaces: The Historical Theaters of Downtown Durham.’ #InMemoriam #TheLostColony #OutdoorDrama #TheatreHistory #TicketsPlease
