Plero helps nonprofits turn everyday giving into an endowment, just like Harvard, without the complexity

I asked Dr. Parks one question…

→ “When you think about the financial sustainability of the Church, how are you thinking about it?”

→ his full answer.

THINK PERMANENCE

I sat down with Todd Tarbert—who was Amazon’s very first legal counsel—and we kept landing on the exact same thought:

There shouldn’t be a nonprofit on the planet that isn’t automatically setting a little something aside for its future.

Not just when there happens to be extra cash laying around, and not after the next big campaign wraps up. Just by default.

Whether it’s 1%, 5%, or 10%—whatever makes sense for them. Every single gift can fund today’s work while a tiny slice quietly builds the foundation for tomorrow.

We automate our payroll.
We automate our 401(k)s.
We automate our monthly bills.

Why wouldn’t we automate the survival of the causes we care about?

That single shift in how we handle money could change the financial health of the entire nonprofit world.

Think permanence.

REMINDER: You weren’t meant to do life entirely on your own.

That gap you’re feeling might just be the space where community is meant to enter. Your need for others isn’t a flaw in your design—it is the design.

Don’t be afraid to need people.

Who would have thought that the objection would become his conviction?

Had this conversation two days ago after my session with some church leaders in Massachusetts. I completely forgot about the event he brought up.

Sometimes partnerships begin with strategy.

Sometimes they begin with conviction.

Sometimes they skip the niceness and begin with OBJECTIONS.

This conversation reminds me that the work we’re doing at @pleroapp of building lasting institutions matters.

Every January 1st, thousands of pastors reset their church’s financial odometer back to zero.

They raise a budget, spend it all on immediate operations, and start completely over 12 months later.

It’s an exhausting treadmill, but in most cases, it’s not a failure of leadership. Most pastors aren’t reckless. They’re just trapped in a setup that forces them to consume everything they receive.

If a dollar arrives without an automated destiny, the current fiscal year eats it alive. Every single time.

The desire to build a multi-generational legacy has always been there. The infrastructure just hasn’t been.

That’s what needs to change.

If you’re a senior pastor, CFO, or board member, be in the room.

I’ll be sharing thoughts on what it takes to build institutions that last.

These conversations are growing beyond what I imagined when this first started as a burden in my mind.

I spend most of my days thinking about one question:

How do we make today’s generosity outlive us?
How does a gift today still strengthen a mission 100 years from now?

Somehow, we have accepted a world where the institutions solving humanity’s hardest problems — churches, nonprofits, faith-based organizations — are often the least financially durable.

Meanwhile, the world’s most powerful institutions have mastered permanence.

That gap matters to me. DEEPLY.

Because missions that transform lives today should not disappear when the people who started them are gone.

We need better systems.
Better stewardship.
Better financial architecture.

Looking forward to this conversation with the Massachusetts Council of Churches.

## Courage + Strength

I woke up this Monday feeling like I needed a sermon on courage. Turns out, I got one—unsolicited.

I joined a call where the leader opened with a simple question: “Does it take courage to sit down, ?” The room went quiet, then a collective “No.”

He leaned in and told us that you don’t need courage to do what you’ve always done.

You don’t need courage to stay where you’re comfortable.

You don’t need courage to keep doing the job you’ve already mastered.

You don’t need courage to avoid difficult conversations.

You don’t need courage to repeat what worked yesterday.

You don’t need courage to play small.

You don’t need courage to choose safety over growth.

If it’s familiar, predictable, and comfortable — it doesn’t require courage.

Courage isn’t for the easy stuff; it’s only released when you face the difficult. It’s a dormant power that only activates when you hit a wall.

He explained it like this: when you consistently lean into the hard things, you build strength through reps.

There’s a reason the command to Joshua was ”be strong and courageous.” It’s because he was about to do something that felt impossible.

If you’ve been praying for courage, stop sitting still. Step out.

Courage doesn’t show up for the comfortable—it only shines when you’re standing in front of the “impossible.”

Churches aren’t broke. Money is already flowing. Tithes, offerings, fundraisers; they all add up.

The real issue is that most churches are pressed to spend 100% of it to survive, not to build.

That’s why the default for so many is to start from zero. Every year. Every campaign.

But survival can feel like a heavy weight, it distracts from focusing on the mission. Survival fights sustainability.

What if every gift today also planted a foundation for tomorrow? That’s the power of an endowment.

Donors bring the seed. The church provides the soil. Legacy is what grows.

It’s time to rethink how we handle wealth in the House of God.

👉 Save this and share with a pastor or church leader you know.

We don’t have a generosity problem. We have a sustainability problem.

And we must change that.
